One of the few issues I have with /e/os is that the location services are not so good. This is likely lack of data, so one way of helping is installing the app “tower collector” and run it and upload its results when in area with sparse data in mozilla location service. It is a FOSS app from F-droid.
I use this one : LocalGsmNlpBackend | F-Droid - Free and Open Source Android App Repository (Deve / Local-GSM-Backend · GitLab).
To improve results you may consider join OpenCellID.
I use Tower Collector because it uploads data to Mozilla Location Serrvice, which /e/os (see MicroG settings) uses. That way I can help other users as well as my self. I can see that OpenCellid claims to be the largest collection, but it does not appear to be used by /e/os?
You’re right, it’s not used by /e/ OOTB.
Probably because the API key registration ?
BTW Tower Collector can also improve OpenCellID: Data sources - OpenCellID wiki
Tower collector can also upload to OpenCellID, so I’ll just enable that
