MsmDownloadTool Just make sure it’s switched off, then hold down both volume up and volume down when plugging your phone back into your PC. Your phone will boot into Emergency Download Mode ([known as EDL], which will let you flash signed partition images
" If your phone doesn’t show up in the tool, then you’ll need to download the drivers linked in both posts as well. Once it connects, simply click “Start” and you’re good to go.
Keep in mind that this program will wipe your phone, but it will also re-lock your bootloader as well. That’s not such a big deal, given that you can easily unlock again, but it’s worth noting. Thanks to the openness of OnePlus devices, it’s a pretty easy process to unlock your bootloader and root again.
“If you’d rather not jump through hoops installing software, it’s also possible to boot a recovery through fastboot and flash your device back to stock manually. This tool is really only for completely wiping your device and starting over fresh.”
Oh whow, yes, “starting over fresh”, yes, please, I’m dreaming about it.
Question 1 is about security and trust, right ? Well, unfortunately you can’t be 100% sure that the restored system will be safe
What I’ll do : unbrick phone, reflash with official ROM, install /e/
Question 2 : it’s a Windows only program, sorry. May work in a VM if the USB mapping is properly done by hypervisor
Yeah got it back alive!
What I literally asked the reparation-shop was: >Software probleem: My Oneplus 6 is “bricked” → while changing android 9 on Oneplus 6 for a custom Rom it got into a fastboot-loop, help wanted to reflash with standard Rom.
They said they could fix it and sent it back, weeks later but okay.
Attached is the start-screen, it says “the bootlader is unlocked and…”, and then comes the next blue “Hi there”-screen inviting me to start.
Yes I want to start, again, to get a google-free world, or at least a beginning.
And I hope there is enough support here to get /e/ installed on this Oneplus6, with me spending maybe another 20 hours in 3 week or so, following all your instructions. And probably more hours. I promise, I’ll try to produce a maybe usefull “Howto-/e/-on-Oneplus6-for-dummies”, something I definitely would have appreciated…
Ay, what should be my first step now?
Or do I have to consider getting an easier phone to get it done properly?
Congrats on having it back, mate. I bricked a brand new OP6 this way, I sent it to an unbricking company and they failed and said it was a hardbrick. I later got a second hand OP6t and successfully installed LOS 16 on it, from which I am writing atm.
The problem with OP is this AB partition table. When you install twrp, you have to download a twrp.zip file on your phone, then download the twrp.img on your computer and then run the image and install the twrp.zip using the image. https://twrp.me/oneplus/oneplus6t.htm
"You will temporarily boot TWRP to perform and later perform a more permanent TWRP installation. First download the TWRP zip file directly on your device. If you don’t download the zip file to your device first for any reason, you will need to adb push the zip to the device because MTP is not currently working on the OnePlus 6T in TWRP. "

There is also a problem upgrading from LOS 16 to LOS 17 because the bootloader of 16 (android 9) is icompatible with the bootloader of 17 (android 10) so you have to first reinstall OOS to get the latest firmware and then freshly install LOS 17.
So be careful to install a version of a custom ROM that you have the firmware for.
I know this is an e thread, not a LOS thread but I guess this experience is applicable to all custom rom installations which require twrp.
Good luck!
Hy Ludo,
have you tried to copy the zip file to your device?
In TWRP there is an install opton as well from where you can start installing the zip.
I had some issues with my Oneplus as well and this was the only way to get it installed.
