HMD Fusion TA-1685

First Time Poster Long Time Lurker. Just bought the Unlocked US HMD Fusion mainly for those crazy POGO Pins on the back AND the very easy repairability of the entire device. I peeked at the HMD Skyline Request and saw the reply descrato got from HMD regarding Kernel Sources and ROMs. I will reach out myself to HMD for the same stuff but was hoping some other adventurous folks might have picked this device up.

I looked at the linked thread what HMD released so far for the Fusion. Seems they haven’t posted it yet at their GPL sink.

(this being qualcomm devices you have some chance there is an already released kernel that would work)

To frame the effort: the kernel sources are just a humble beginning, it takes some repo templates to get going.

still no Fusion sources at the HMD gpl sink. If there’s a user who bought it (receipt…) you have legal grounds to ask for the GPL sources to be posted

Even as a filthy American?! I have one :smiling_imp: so

Very interesting! I’ll have to see what kind of tomfoolery I can get into with this.

Really like repairable phones. This one and the Skyline look great. Hope these phones get some attention.

I just received a new HMD Fusion. I could ask for the GPL sink. Could you please provide with arguments or legal references to support the action? Thanks in advance!

I purchased an HMD Fusion TA-1680 with a dealer invoice. But the bootloader cannot be unlocked with classic unlock commands. I wrote to HMD support and they confirmed this.

here’s a template for the kernel: gpl - How do I get the kernel source for my Android tablet? - Open Source Stack Exchange

unlock… not sure when or if at all this can be demanded. By 31-07-2026 with What's my Right to Repair? - Right to Repair Europe → “Right to use compatible SP & No software blocks” → Directive - EU - 2024/1799 - EN - EUR-Lex → paragraph 18 maybe implicates unlock

manufacturers should not use any contractual clauses, hardware or software techniques that impede the repair of goods for which there are repairability requirements set out in Union legal acts listed in Annex II to this Directive unless they are justified by legitimate and objective factors, including to prevent or restrict the unauthorised use of works and other subject matters protected by intellectual property rights

one could argue lots of ways, but it’s a start

Try arguing with HMD/Nokia executives based in China. You will only get a smile back.

no need, just argue with local jurisdiction. No sales, no smiles (at best in 2026)

Well, your thesis reads well, but our public prosecutor’s office will close the case for some far-fetched reason, for example lack of personnel and not important for the general public.
