How can I control (or deactivate) my MMSs?

Hi, I have a few problems with MMSs that are currently doubling my phone bill. I can not find a solution to this problem in the forum, other than a partial one in point three under.

  1. If my SMS gets too long, it is automatically converted to an MMS. If I do not see the warning that flashes up for a second I am charged quite a lot.
  2. If I use emojis, then my SMSs are also converted to MMS. I have started getting into the habit of using : ) instead of  but that is annoying. The same problem happens when receiving MMSs with emojis (I believe).
  3. If I want to broadcast an SMS to several people, sometimes I am asked if I want to enable replies from all. Sometimes I am not asked and the message is converted to MMS. This has been reported here.

I have not found any setting that can control this behavior, or even deactivate MMS altogether. I have contacted my provider and they can (or will) not deactivate MMSs.

Is there any way around the problem with /e/OS as it is?
If not, can someone recommend a FOSS SMS app that is privacy respecting and can prevent my bills being so high?

Many thanks in advance,
Anthony

There is a Setting in the Message app: open Settings from the 'Three lines` menu, scroll down to ‘Send long messages as MMS’, and disable it

Hi Pete, thanks very much for the message.
I can not find the setting you mention. I did find a solution to another problem I have been having though. Here you can turn off “Mobile numbers only”
I clicked on the three lines, then settings, but can not find the ‘Send long messages as MMS’ part that you say should be there.

What am I doing wrong?

Sorry - I have no idea. I checked on a device running /e/OS v1.8-s. That functionality is there for me in /e/'s Message app, and in the QKSMS app from which /e/'s app is forked

Speaking of QKSMS you could possibly try that as the option does seem to appear in that version also. If it doesn’t appear after that then it might be a limitation of your device although I don’t really see what your device would be lacking
