How to install app in A15 work profile

Hello everyone!

I have to use my phone for work stuff which in my cases imposes creating a work profile (A15 like, not shelter, etc.) and installing the ms InTune app (“Company Portal”).

That finally worked (though it was difficult process), but what I did not achieve is to install on top of the ms InTune app in the work profile any other app (teams, outlook, you name it). I got the whole setup to run in the personal profile (basically with the InTune app being there twice) though.

Anyone knows how to install an apps in the work profile?

System: FP6 with official e/ OS 3.1.4 (running very smoothly by the way, what a nice OS!)

Answering myself in the hope this message can help someone save some time.

I could never get the work profile created by intune to function properly: while intune itself would start and successfully register the device on my companies servers, I could never install any actually useful app (say outlook for instance). If these apps are installed in the regular profile, they don’t see intune (as should be) and refuse to connect to the company servers (as requested by my company).

The solution was to remove the work profile altogether and create a new one using Shelter. Installing apps turned out to be tricky, but it is actually very easy to clone an app already installed in the regular profile. So installing them regularly (without even starting then) and cloning them to the work profile using shelter made it work.

As read somewhere else on this forum (sorry could not find the link to give back to caesar what belongs to him) the next trick is to NOT configure intune (company portal) but directly log on using outlook, teams, or whatever app which relies on intune. Intune needs to be here, but is best kept untouched.

I did not need to setup any Google account in any of the profiles.

Good luck!

Hey, thank you so much for your post. it is such a coincident that i have been looking for a way to get it to work for past 2 days and saw your post, there isn’t alot of information about that online.

so if i understand it correctly, the way is to:

  • create work profile using shelter.
  • install teams, outlook (these are only 2 i need as minimum) on regular profile, and then clone them using shelter to work profile

what would be the next step, where does intune come into play. should i install it in regular profile and clone it to work as well and log in there?

thanks again.

I can’t answer your follow-up question but want to add that you can also remove the apps from you regular profile after cloning them with Shelter. And you should also clone the app store from which you got them, so they are kept up-to-date. I use Shelter this way for years and it works flawlessly.

Hi There,

Indeed my post was not clear in terms of procedure.

The steps I followed and worked were:

  • Install Shelter
  • Install all appliations required by your “work workflow”. You don’t need to (and maybe should not?) to even start them and configure anything at this stage. Having them installed regularly simply makes their installation into the work profile easy.
For the microsoft stack of tools this could be
    • InTune (Company Profile)
    • Outlook
    • Teams
    • etc.
  • Create a “Work profile” using Shelter (follow the instructions)
  • In Shelter, after the previous was successful you will see 2 lists of apps:
    • One with all your apps in the “Main” profile
    • A much shorter one in the “Shelter” profile (this is your work profile). On my system this were things like Files, Contacts, the microG parameters apps, etc.
  • From the main profile list, identify and click on the apps you want to run from within the work profile. Select for each relevant app “clone to Shelter (work profile)”
In particular InTune if your company wants it to be installed.
Sebastian’s suggestion to include at least one app to install other apps (App lounge, Aurora, etc.) and keep them up to date in the Work profile makes plain sense to me.
  • After doing this, if you return to your launcher (For e/ the default is Bliss) you will see all the apps present in both Work and Main profiles appear twice, with an extra icon on the ones which are running within the work profile.
As suggested above by Sebastian, you can remove from the Main profile the apps you only want to run in Work profile (uninstall them as usual with your launcher, typically by long pressing on its icon).
  • Get started with the configuration of the apps in the work profile.
    • This is where it seemed to help in the case of the microsoft tools to first configure outlook, teams, etc. and not the InTune (but I did not try much harder than this, I stopped once things were running).
  • I also updated the list of shortcuts in the OS menu (not sure how it is called, I mean the list of shortcuts such as Airplane mode, Bluetooth, etc. you get by swiping down from the screen top) to have the “Work Apps” shortcut at the top.
This shortcut allows to de-activate (like make sleep) any app running in the Work profile (thus preserving my sanity when I cut off from work stuff, if I did not de-activate the notifications from teams and outlook).
  • A nice thing is the list of accounts configured for Main and Work Profiles also is different. As we have some extra services in my company which require such Accounts to be configure on the phone to use the corresponding services (for me the desk reservation system for instance), this also allows to keep thing tidy.

Hope this helps, if not let me know and I can try to edit the steps listed above to improve clarity.
