How to send a text message from a Mac, Linux or Windows computer?

Hi,

How can I send a text message from my Mac, Linux or Windows computer using my Fairphone 6 and e/os? For Android users, there is a Google website they can use which can be paired with there phone. Is there something like that for e/os users?

Thank you.

Unfortunately, I’m unaware of a solution in /e/OS that replicates what is possible on an iPhone with iMessage. Also, if it needs to be truly cross-platform…well, I’ve done my level best to find a solution that doesn’t involve massive caveats (multiple phone numbers, the requirement of a Mac + Google Firebase, Nextcloud plugins that haven’t been updated in years)…and the best I’ve come up with is MyPhone Explorer. It’s Windows-only for the desktop component, and there’s no browser frontend for it…but honestly, it’s got a pretty incredible feature set, for free, and the developer is pretty awesome in his own right.

So…while I too pine for the day when someone - ANYONE - manages to recreate the best workflow there ever was (WinMo 6.5 + Exchange 2010), MPE is about the closest I’ve come. I mean, there’s MightyText, and it checks all your boxes, but it’s $8/month and involves “someone else’s server”, so while those seem like implicit dealbreakers…they weren’t enumerated so I’ll throw it into the mix as an option, depending on where your pain points are.

Seconded.

On Linux, you can use KDE Connect (GSConnect extension from GNOME), with the KDE Connect app installed on your phone.

For professional purposes there are small devices called GSM modems having an own SIM card and an antenna. You can reach these devices using an API or a Telnet connection from any capable PC application. I send a lot of SMS messages this way mostly to inform people that an autonomous system installed somewhere doesn’t work as expected anymore so anybody should have a look at it.

Before I used these devices the GSM provider had an e-mail service. You could send him an an e-mail and they sent then SMS to the receivers you specified.

My solution is to use Signal Private Messenger. I realize this is different than text messages, but if you are communicating with know contacts that are friends or family it works well.

Once you have Signal on the phone you can then add desktop version to Linux and Windows, not sure about Mac.

Also some cell phone providers have a website where you can text from, worth looking into also.
