How to use usb pen drive with my phone

I have a few USB pen drives but no laptop

Can I use these on my phone to listen to music and, importantly, use them for uni work? If so, do I use a USB hub that plugs into the charging port on my phone?

Yes, just get an adapter from USB type C to standard USB for your pen drive.
You can also use small USB SSDs, in more stationary setup, like at home.

Thank you.

Is there software I can use to look listen is the format will be different from PC to phone

Good point, Android will not work with all fileformats, no NTFS, no ZFS don’t know about Mac.
This is also why most pen drives com with xFAT formatted – more universally recognised and capable of handling large files.

Move all the files on the pen drive to a PC or laptop storage. Format the pen drive to xFAT then move music back on the pen drive. As for the format of audio use VLC as a player. I think it will play most formats.
