I’ve been a e OS user for 2 years, but my FP3 died in january and in the meantime I was using a phone from my employer (Harmony OS / Huawei)
So I bought myself a FP5 (Android 14) this week and I want to flash e OS again.
So I’ve read Install /e/OS on a Fairphone FP5 - “FP5” and I’m a bit scared of the anti-rollback feature ( I don’t want to brick it).
My phone says, that the Android version is 14, but T is 13, right? Is it going to brick at this point? The security Patch is matching 2024-07-05. (yyyy.mm.dd)
I’ve never done an install on a FP5 but from what i know /e/os U or A14 isn’t available yet. The team is currently working on it. The latest version is t so A13. I don’t know if you have to downgrade your stock OS but i know this is required for some devices that are still supported by their vendors. If i had an advice, it would be to install /e/OS after the 2.4 release as the current releases are known to make you’re FP5 randomly crash and reboot. Wait for the patch to be release (2.4) and then install it.
I did, I did.
I’ve actually read it a lot. Nevertheless, it’s not clear to me whether it’s just the security patches or also the Android version. I have just installed Fairphone OS (A13) to be on the safe side.
“Rollback protection errors trigger if you install an update whose version number is LESS than the rollback index’s value stored on device.
[…]
The value of rollback index is NOT dependent on the currently installed ANDROID VERSION.”
Hi, Longtime /e/ OS user (both self-installed and purchased from Murena) looking to upgrade. I like the Fairphone 4, but would rather upgrade to the 5, since the 4 is basically the same age as my current phone. I am in the US, and while it seems like the FP5 should work, I haven’t seen that explicitly stated anywhere. Murena isn’t selling it here, and I was wondering if that’s just lag or if there was a compatibility issue. Do you mind telling me if you are in the US?
Hey.
No, I’m a EU citizen. I read, that Murena is going to release eOS preinstalled Fairphone 5 soon. Don’t know though, if it will be available for the US as well.
What I know is, that it is possible to flash eOS to Fairphone, as I just did it myself. I need to lock the bootloader, tho (if I don’t brick it that way )
Thanks! Yes, Murena is already selling the F5 in Europe, but not in les Etas-Unis, c’est dommage. It’s the reason they’re not selling it that I’m worried about. If it’s just lag, I will acquire one somehow, and install /e/OS. If there is some other issue, I’d rather wait. These Reddit posts indicate that I can get it to work with my current carrier, so I may take the chance. Reddit is never wrong, nes pas?
If I use the “Murena handsets” link at the top of the forum page and declare that I am in USA, I can reach this link (dated 30 Aug 2023) America/murena-fairphone-5-availibility which includes
We don’t have any launch date to announce yet for the USA
At Murena, we partnered with Fairphone to bring you the Fairphone 4 in the USA a few weeks ago, and people are loving it.
For now, the Fairphone 5 is not ready to hit the US market, and we have no visibility yet when it will be. To be frank, it is not what we would like to announce, but it is what it is.
Thanks! I hadn’t seen that link exactly, but I think I read similar language somewhere in another post from a Murena person.
The statement I’m focusing in on is this one
Because that can mean so many things. If it’s just that Murena can’t make enough money per unit selling it, or if there’s some annoying regulatory hurdle they don’t want to deal with, I get it, but it doesn’t mean I can’t buy and install /e/ myself. If there is some technical reason (handset is not compatible with the infrastructure or something) that is what I want to avoid.
A regulation that I suspect may be causing problems is this one. Because the Fairphone 5 is > $800, it means it’s more expensive/complicated to ship it to the US. However, if I ask a friend to bring one back for me, I sidestep this completely as an issue (unless the friend is bringing in a lot of valuables). Of course, the phone is < $800 in Europe, so maybe it’s something else entirely, but you get the idea.
I love my Librem 5 (it’s not the USA version though), but it is a little too precious for daily use. I’ve used it for my daily driver a few weeks at a time, but worry too much about it when I do, and the battery life is frankly not very good (though much better than when it first came out).
Regardless, I don’t think that it’s first-order protectionism keeping Fairphone 5 out of the US
