Installing the newest /e/OS on my OnePlus 7T

Hi - I’m a longtime and very happy /e/ OS user. I’m running /e/OS 3.0.4-t-20250710507809-community-hotdogb on a OnePlus 7T HD1901 hotdogb.

This version no longer receives updates; I ought to have moved to 4 over a year ago, but I never did.

The device reports it’s on Android version 13, 10 July 2025.

My attempts to install the freshest /e/ OS version using /e/OS installer via Vivaldi on Xubuntu 26.04 fail at the point after the OS image has downloaded and the phone has restarted in bootloader mode. The installer can’t detect the device at this point. I’ve confirmed this using Android dev command line tools. `adb devices` lists the device:

$ adb devices
List of devices attached
f37e682a	device

…but on rebooting the device into bootloader mode, the tools can no longer find it:

$ adb reboot bootloader
$ adb devices
List of devices attached

$ fastboot devices
$

I see on Install /e/OS on a OnePlus - 7T - "hotdogb" | /e/OS documentation that the device must be on Android 12:

Before following these instructions please ensure that the device is on the latest Android 12 firmware.

If your device is currently using a newer or older version than the required version, please upgrade or downgrade to the required version before proceeding with your /e/OS installation.

The required version is Android 12 , which may be lower than the /e/OS version you are about to install - this is not an error! If there are multiple updates of that version (e.g. security updates), make sure to use the latest!

If you need to upgrade or downgrade your device, please search online for guides. We are unable to provide specific instructions here and on our support platforms.

I’ve found nothing (a) remotely trustworthy or (b) relevant on the web to allow me to downgrade from 13 to 12.

Is it enough to do a Factory reset in Recovery mode?

Suggests Android 13(T) was running fine.

You can do Factory reset and then Fresh install, on the basis that your Android 13 (T) was correctly installed originally (on Android 12 or the guidance at the time of install).

Perhaps the fastboot problem is lack of permissions. You could try sudo.

or

sudo usermod -aG plugdev $LOGNAME

Thank you for the response. I had tried `sudo` as well. Good tip on plugdev. I’ll do the factory reset as you suggest and report how I get on.

(My only reason for moving on from 13 is that it’s no longer receiving security updates. The device itself is still performing extraordinarily well, considering it’s a seven year old device.)
