Is everything gone?

Good evening,

I have a problem. It is my own fault. Now I would like to minimize the damage.
I have replaced the operating system on my Fairphone 5. After some minor problems, everything went smoothly in the end. However, I didn’t manage the last step, locking the bootloader (from the official version). Instead, I set up the phone completely. When everything was ready, I tried again to lock the bootloader. But I hadn’t read in the documentation that a factory reset takes place here!
Now all my phone numbers, addresses and messages seem to be gone. But since booting after the fastboot flashing lock_critical command didn’t take longer than normal, I think everything is still there. It was booted with a recovery version.
Can I undo the command? If not, is there any other way to access at least some of the data?
I would be very happy if I could get some help.
Thank you very much!

Hello @falx_manubrium, Welcome to the /e/ forum.

Good morning,

Thank you for your answer.

What does that mean exactly?

I’m trying to stay calm, but I’m a bit desperate.
I’ve read a lot today. Among other things, that after a factory reset the data is irretrievably gone.
Is this also the case with /e/OS?

Yes, I am sorry to say, if you are confident the command was successful and I expect you saw the “First start wizard”, that is a full Format data.

I don’t like the answer.
But thank you for giving me some certainty.

It is easy to say after the fact but you have to do backups :upside_down_face:

Perhaps the instructions should be adapted so that the fact that locking the bootloader causes a factory reset is made clearer.

Thank you

Yeah, I agree. Usually users don’t lock the bootloader after some time using it. It is more of a exception.

It`s correct…

Yeah, you never know when you are going to drop your smartphone somewhere…
