Issue with always-on VPN and sync

Hi,

When using the always-on VPN option, the murena backup always crashes. If I disable the VPN always-on, the sync works but it stops my VPN.

It looks like the sync tool needs to stop the VPN app (Proton in my case) to backup the app settings. So I cannot use the always-on, I tried the split tunneling for the backup app, it seems to work for the backup but then I lose my connection for the other apps as the VPN app has been stopped.

It looks like the same issue here : Issues with sync and auto-updates; possibly not working perfectly with VPN and workaround proposal

Any solution to this ?

Could you let me know if when you say backup crashes does it mean backup stops or it fails?

It fails because it looses connection as the VPN is disconnected while backuping proton vpn.

The developer mentioned that in the first screenshot the internet seems disabled for the app.

Yes, it has been disconnected because the VPN app is stopped. The always-on VPN setting doesn’t allow internet connection without VPN and that is why the backup fails.

That are two settings, not the same, aren’t they?

Not really, the first one tries to keep the VPN running all the time and the second one doesn’t allow any connection if the VPN is not running.

Yep sure, I am only saying the second setting is not automatically ON as your wording suggested.
Did you try w/o?
Might be a general android bug (maybe), for me “block w/o vpn” always causes hickups…

I have tried it, without the second one the backup works but the VPN doesn’t reconnect automatically.

It doesn’t look like the Android bug I think.

If I could choose not to backup the VPN, it will work fine I guess.

I also have issues with proton VPN + backup

In most cases vpn is simply disconnected and backup proceeds. Sometimes I get the notification that backup failed, in this case I noticed the vpn is still on.

Often enough when von was disconnected I cannot reconnect to it without restarting the phone.

I will try to create a log next time this happens.

@Manoj I had the issue again a couple of hours back. I have the log dump and some AI analysis of it which looks reasonable. Should I upload this somewhere?

An issue on gitlab with the log attached would be the best way to get the information to the developers.
