I am a member of a creative writing group. This week, I decided to write something about privacy. Obviously I don’t need to convince any of you about the importance of privacy but, this poem was aimed at a less techy and older audience. I know this is not what this forum is intended for so, I apologise if I am breaking the rules with this post.
The Value Of Privacy
When I was young, so long ago
Before the computer … smartphone
Everyone knew that they could keep
Things secret for themselves alone,
Treasures, mementos hid away
But, it is so different today.
A cardboard box under a bed,
A diary opened with a key,
A hidden drawer inside a desk,
All ways to protect privacy.
Today people don’t seem to care
About the secrets that they share.
I didn’t change, I feel the same.
My secrets still matter to me
But, they are getting hard to keep
With this nosy technology.
To me it is starting to feel
Our lives are just one big reveal!
Now our government wants to know
All of our secrets, thoughts as well,
All of our data, every bit
To sift through, analyse and sell.
Once it’s all theirs, then it will be
Too late to value privacy.
