Keyboard languages

Hi, I have a new handset with /E/OS and I am evaluating if I can replace my Google ANdroid phone. I am based in Ireland. I found the English option for Irish region and selected this, the result of which I get an Australian keyboard. On the Australian keyboard the dollar key is placed in the convenient location reserved for the Euro key on an Irish keyboard. There is no Irish option in the list and no other Eurozone based variety on English keyboard to use instead.

I installed Gboard for now, but this kind of defeats the purpose of switching to /E/OS if I still have to rely on Google for localisation. Are there any alternative and trustworthy keyboard alternatives I could install, picking some random app from F-droid and sending it my every keyboard stroke makes me a bit uncomfortable.

Did you try setting System > Languages > Add a language > Gàidhlig ?

The spelling suggests that is Scots Gaelic rather than Irish Gaelic. If it will put the Euro symbol in a convenient location I am fine it that but I imagine the pound would be the preferred currency for a Scottish Gaelic speaker. I will give it a shot.

I thought perhaps I searched too fast, but looks like I was directed on account of

Thanks for the suggestion. It looks like Gaeilge (Irish) is also available as a language but neither Gaeilge, Gaidhlig or English (Ireland) comes with a keyboard layout unless you install Gboard.

Hi Paddy,

If you just want the euro symbol, there is an extra step. Tap the button labeled “?123” in the bottom left corner and the € will appear in the position of the letter ‘D.’

I had that issue too with English (Australia) being my default keyboard language. If my memory serves the keyboard was defaulting to the system language and English (Australia) was the default system setting for some reason. It may be a quirk of selecting the Irish region during the set up process.

To check or change the keyboard language simply tap and hold the full ‘comma’ button beside the ‘?123’ button and you will be able to check which language your keyboard is using and change it from there.

I hope that helps you with your query.

Regards,

Gioni.

There is a keyboard called Florisboard mentioned in another thread. I tried it and it looks ok. I posted earlier but it was flagged by the community as ‘advertising’. To be clear, I have no connection to Florisboard or its developers and have only just discovered it while searching the forum yesterday. Use it at your own risk.
Gboard is also working fine and it’s network access can be switched off to preserve privacy.

I cannot tell if this may work on the default keyboard in this case (perhaps not) but if you do set up more than one language ( … this is an extension of the good comment by @Gioni … ) you will have a globe :globe_with_meridians: left of spacebar. This might be a way to have convenient keys for most jobs, but reveal others say for €. Remembering that many locales still allow for instance, Long press £ → will offer €, $, ¥.

Yes, you can add multiple languages and switch between them on the default keyboard and yes there are ways to get to a euro symbol on most of the keyboard layouts with a few extra clicks or long presses etc.

Having played a bit more with Floris it appears to have some issues as well so I think Gboard is probably the best option for an Irish user.

Maybe I will figure out at some point how to contribute a keyboard layout to the project.

Hi mccode,

I use a keyboard app from F-Droid called HeliBoard. In its settings you can set the euro symbol to be the default currency symbol. So it replaces the dollar or sterling symbol. No messing about tapping extra buttons etc…

As a ‘best option for an Irish user’ are you refering to needing a Gaeilge formatted keyboard layout? I’m not a Gaeilgeoir so I have never had a need to use a vowel with a fada but would the process not be the same as typing in any language using their fada equivalents.

Regards,

Gioni.

I mean generally to have the layout a user in Ireland would be accustomed to rather than a layout for a full Gaeilgóir per se. Useful keys in convenient locations, fadas and suggestions in English and Irish. Even a non Irish speaker mixes in a cúpla focal here and there. Little things that make it easier to ping Siobhán and Saoirse. That’s the craic anyway. What I just wrote here would have been less convenient to write if I didn’t have Gboard with Irish and English.

I have a similar issue. I am using multiple languages on my keyboard and i often have to use special letters, accents and punctuation - but it’s the special letters i am mostly interested in.

I know i can just change the language of the keyboard to get the desired key, but i was wondering if there is any way of mushing some of these languages together.

I would rather long-press my C key to get a ç, than having to change the language of the entire keyboard all together.

You may want to try other FOSS keyboards, like Florisboard, AnySoftKeyboard and Futo Keyboard. All of them are on f-droid (open source in App Lounge). I was very happy with ASK, but now I am trying Futo for one month already.

I have tried a lot of these so far myself. I have not been able to install openboard for some reason, my attempts to install it always fail. I have still not managed to find anything close to Gboard for usability. It is a pity to have to bring that one Google app with me but at least it can be installed without a Google account.

Even Futo with the newest update? It progressed a lot!

Perhaps it could do the job if I spent some time to work on contributing my locale. It is probably the best I have seen so far on e/OS

[Solved]

Hello!

Thank you very much for the suggestions. I have tried both AnySoftKeyboard as well as Futo Keyboard but i can not find Florisboard.

Futo seems to be my favourite but all of them seem to no longer function with my phone’s (Fairphone 5, e/OS) haptics anymore.

I want my phone to vibrate when i type something (unpopular preference, i know, but it helps me).
I checked both in the system settings as well as the keyboard settings. I reinstalled the keyboard, i restarted my phone a bunch of times but nothing works.

How can i get my keyboard to vibrate again?

I was near the end of my ropes when i asked for help with my last post but i found the solution immediately after.

Apparently Battery Saver mode affects your haptic feedbacks.
