Lack of backward compatibility is a deal breaker

A couple of years ago when I got a new phone I installed e/os on the old one in case the need arose for a clean phone and now with the new president it looks like that is the case so I pulled that phone out only to find it is not usable any more – the web browser is broken and pops up an error that it’s incompatible (with what it doesn’t say) and the upgrade options fail

So I look on your web site and the help I see is to reinstall the next os version so ok, but there is none anymore for my phone model it’s no longer supported

This is disappointing to say the least and for a product like this the lack of dependability is a real deal breaker – I know you have new phones for sale but with your lack of backward compatibility I have no trust that they will work in the future when I need them so I’ll be looking at my other options

Hello @harley, Welcome to the /e/ forum.

What are your other options?

Support for devices is usually determined by whether LineageOS (on which /e/ is based) still supports it, as well as whether that version of Android still being developed or not.

If the browser is your main issue, you could try installing something like Fennec (basically Firefox without telemetry) from F-Droid, either through App Lounge or the F-Droid store app. That way you could use an up-to-date browser that is not tied to system updates.

You don’t even say what the phone in question is.

The “I’ll take my business elsewhere!” claim always has the most impact when business as well as elsewhere are of undetermined viability. It adds credibility to the claim, and affected organisations are more likely to be shaking in their boots, frantically scrambling to rectify what they can only guess is there to rectify.

I guess.

I noticed a rising trend in post like these. I think someone may be running a discredit campaign. I guess eOS is getting under someones (entity’s) skin.

It might just be a sign that what began as an enthusiast niche is reaching more into the curious part of mainstream, resulting in mainstream (often unrealistic) expectations and mainstream (often vague) ways to give information.
This would then not be ill-intentioned and might be a good sign overall.

It’s the bots, they run the internet now :radioactive:

This being a bot or not someone who is legitimately wanting to solve the issue might be true. Especially since there hasn’t been any sort of reply with the phone model or other information that we would need to help solve the issue. I hope I’m wrong, but unless we hear anything back, it’s probably true…

If it was an actual person he would have replied with the make and model. Likely we could have found a ROM for him since a lot of old phones have been archived. So yeah, bot.
