Limit battery charging

I wish to set a limit on how much the battery is charged, say 80%. Is there a way to do this in /e/OS? F-droid has the app Battery Charge Limit but it seems unmaintained, the latest release is from 2018. Are there any other ways?

if your smartphone is also several years old, this application is suitable and does the job, but the system must be rooted.

This should be available at Settings > Battery > Charging control > Enable charging control

My device is a Samsung Galaxy S5 (klte). It does not allow me to “Enable charging control” in the Battery settings. It seems I will need to root my device.

There are instructions for enabling “adb root” on this page in the documentation but the specified setting is not available in the developer options on my device. Is this the rooting that needs to be done? Can it be done in any other way?

My device (Fairphone 3+) is not rooted, so perhaps this is device-specific and/or dependent of Android version. It seems that you are on Android R (Android 11) (needs activating “Show Legacy Devices” in “Search options” to show S5). Well, then you are probably right in looking for an app enabling a battery charging cap.

Only few /e/ Roms have this option. Most devices need to be rooted. Let’s wait what LineageOS Android 14 brings futurewise

Not super-conveniant as it does not stop charging automatically but gives alarms for specified charging levels:

(Latest vetsion is from 2021 but I do not consider that an issue because it just works…)

plus charging control seems to be defined in different ways:
for Pixel 4a eOS v2.4 (T) charging control does not allow to set limits but to define the target time-point for 100% charging level and the time-point from which this function is applied
(for a phone connected to a charger, say overnight … e.g. phone plugged any time after 22:00 will reach 100% @ 06:00)

I use it myself, very convenient.

I did this with magisk:
-you need to flash (from recovery) a Magisk image that will modify the boot partition
-install a magisk app to manage

What is Magisk? Are you referring to this project on github?

There seems to be a lot of shady websites with downloadable zips claiming the name Magisk. As such is it would be considerate to be precise regarding the software you are referring to so that people can avoid installing malware on their phones.
