It seems that QKSMS is (sadly) abandoned.

That’s not an issue as long as we’re talking eOS, see same thread that you just linked:

The /e/OS App is a fork of QKSMS … https://gitlab.e.foundation/e/os/Message , meaning /e/OS developers maintain it themselves and the /e/OS App is not bound to whatever fate of the original QKSMS.
