Also for those who have used or remember SystemUI Tuner ( IzzyOnDroid | GitHub ) it finally got some updates this year.
The Play Store version has not been updated so if interested do not install from App Lounge as that has the old version.
I do not run A12 or A13 so no idea how well the tweaks work on latest Androids.
Searched the forums but haven’t seen this mentioned.
QKSMS, the SMS app that /e/'s Message is forked from, hasn’t been updated in a long time and seems unmaintained. I think that’s common knowledge.
I remember QKSMS was forked but didn’t look into it. Mostly because I do VoIP and can’t use standard SMS apps.
Do you know what availability on App Lounge might be contingent on? I would install the APK from F-Droid but want to make sure it upgrades properly. At this time, App Lounge on my device (/e/OS latest version T) only finds QKSMS 3.10.1 (the QUIK fork on F-Droid is version 4.0.7).
Why would I need the F-Droid app when App Lounge searches & generally encompasses all the apps on F-Droid? In my experience it causes problems when you have 2 systems doing the same thing. That’s the potential problem.
I’ve never needed the F-Droid app to install F-Droid apps on /e/OS before, and I don’t see why I should start now just because there’s an apparent inconsistency in the listings. In fact that’s even more of a reason to get this question answered rather than rushing toward a convenient workaround.
Maybe @irrlicht you can provide some technical assurance that apps installed through F-Droid will always be upgraded by App Lounge… or provide more details about how the stores work together when both of them are installed. If that isn’t readily available I’d prefer if the community could answer my original question.
In my experience it caused problems to use App Lounge, again and again, so much that I decided not to use it anymore (except for one action: install an F-Droid client).
Until now I didn’t play around with this new feature of supporting F-Droid repos. When I’m talking about F-Droid I mean always a separate F-Droid client, not App Lounge.
thanks @irrlicht, I do like that strategy: it makes sense when most of our apps are coming from F-Droid… though we would also use the App Lounge for anonymous access to some Google Play app(s).
The thread about Waterfox browser being closed, I thought it best to post here. I do NOT recommend Waterfox since for me it causes DNS leaks that are not there with Mull or /e/ default browser. I wonder if other users experienced the same.
I’ve been trying to learn e-os and libre and privacy conscious replacements for my old favorite apps.
Here are some I’ve found so far:
I loved Nova launcher. I’ve tried a few out, and so far like Lawnchair best to replace it
I already had Protonmail with simple login instead of Gmail
I was psyched to see that Proton drive now backs up photos automatically in the background and seems to just work.
My last phone was a Motorola, and I really missed the shake-for-flashlight feature, it was the thing I used my phone for most. Torchie is almost as good with using buttons for the light.
I replaced Beyondpod with Antennapod plus Feeder for written feeds.
Still exploring for:
a calendar to share with my wife instead of Google calendar,
an Evernote replacement,
a music player to replace Rocketplayer
a Google Fit alternative
I’ll try to remember to update here as I find things.
It seems logical then to combine Proton Mail and Calendar.
(but you or your wife have to subscribe for at least 3.49€/month if you want to use the calendar sharing function)
I also could recommend the Proton Calendar
Give Notesnook a trial, it’s a few levels above Evernote.
Simply the best for me: VLC MediaPlayer
The only Fitness App I know that doesn’t share your data with the world is Gadgetbridge. It has a limited functionality compared to Google Fit and only makes sense with a compatible Smartwatch
