Hello. I need to lock my bootloader, as the Revolut app doesn’t run any more on my unlocked Fairphone 4. The phone security patch is 5th of July 2024 and the running version of the /e/ OS is 3.0.4-a14-20250708507308-official-FP4. Will I brick my phone if I try to lock it? The more tutorials and posts I read, the more confused I am. Thank you.
I think the risk would depend on the security patch level of the “Android OS” (formerly called “Fairphone OS”) that was installed on your FP4 before you switched. By the way, I guess you meant “5th of July 2025” in your second sentence, right?
Having said that, right now locking the bootloader might not (yet) make Revolut run again, as this is a known issue Murena means to fix with the very next update:
P.S.: From what I remember, changing the bootloader status will trigger a factory reset.
Hmm, well, I’m attaching a screenshot of the data my phone shows me. I wouldn’t want to mistake one date for another. That’s why I’m confused.
But if locking the bootloader might not yet make Revolut run again until a future update, I will lower my concerns.
Thanks for your quick response.
For what I know, vendor security level is not important: Android security (SPL) is.
Just a question to complete the scenario: when unlocked the bootloader what was the SPL (or, more simple, when did you unlock the bootloader)?
Locking your Bootloader will wipe your data. Hope you are aware of that.
Not relevant now with pictures, but that typo would have been in regard to locking.
I bought my Fairphone 4 on January 2023, and I unlocked the bootloader few weeks after.
(I was not aware of the existence of /e/ OS and when I discovered it immediately I decided to deGoogle the phone.)
I’m aware that the bootloader will wipe my data in the case of loocking it. Thanks, mihi.
As wrote by @urs_lesse, I presume the SPL when you unlock your bootloader to install eOS was, like mine that time, older than the SPL you (and I) have now (1/6/25).
I’m not a technician but I think you will not brick your phone if you lock your bootloader now. Wait for a more secure answer.
In the meanwhile, you can test the ability to lock before do the operation, with a fastboot command (don’t remember… get_unlock_ability or similar) that you could search in the forum.
As said, all your data will be wiped.
OK so don’t lock the phone.
