I’m the meandad that doesn’t want my children to fall in the pits of modern technology, already having issues. My son’s old phone had been effectively degoogled from an app perspective except for chrome and assistant, he doesn’t know the password for google on his account, didn’t have access to gmail. He ended up using the previews on google assistant to bypass the blocking of all unapproved websites and also bypassing content filtering.
But anyway looking into a next solution for him needs to be baked into the device and needs log just about everything. It’s frustrating that google doesn’t content filter assistant and there aren’t user searchable logs on its use. Being baked in, a clear history button could save logs and send it a parental account, texts or emails could be flagged and sent automatically to a parent.
My son’s phone apps were limited to email, and calandar (via Proton), and one feature that I really like on google is putting the phone on grayscale because it makes it less visually appealing for him to look at. Personally I’d be happiest with the worst eink black and white screen on the market. I want him to have a phone but not want to use it entertainment
Sorry, I’ve rambled here, its 3am and I’m looking for a solution that doesn’t exist, but I want the ability to limit access to change all the setting I make on the phone, I need to get a better idea of what /e/os can do and stopped here along the way.
Oh, another issue I ran into is that my NextDNS on my network ended up all inquiries on the phone setup with nextdns, if DNS could be less restricted for a specific wifi network (again locking children out of settings like connecting to new wifi networks, wouldn’t be a bad option to have) it would allow a little more protection. I think the problem I ran into though is that the previews that are used in google assistant come from a google server and only the link makes a dns request to the actual content.
