Mail App \ Microsoft oAuth Requirement

Hi Guys,

I am prepared to workaround this however curious to know if the Mail app will eventually support oAuth2 authentication with Microsoft?

i cannot get passed the Microsoft credentials page when trying to switch over from “normal password” authentication. Seems like the Mail app is not getting the token from the webpage and loops back to the login screen.

Here is what Microsoft is saying:

Update your sign-in technology before September 16th, 2024 to maintain email access.

The safety and security of your information is top priority for Microsoft. To help keep your account secure, Microsoft will no longer support the use of third-party email and calendar apps which ask you to sign in with only your Microsoft Account username and password. To keep you safe you will need to use a mail or calendar app which supports Microsoft’s modern authentication methods. If you do not act, your third-party email apps will no longer be able to access your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live.com email address on September 16th.

What do you need to do?
If you are receiving this email, you are currently using an email or calendar app that uses a less secure authentication method to connect to your Outlook.com email account. You will need to upgrade your third-party mail and calendar app to a version which supports modern authentication methods.

Microsoft provides free versions of Outlook for your PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices which can be easily downloaded and connect to your email account. Using an updated version of an Outlook application will ensure you are connecting in the most secure way.

How can you set up your Gmail, Apple Mail, or other third-party mail application?
Various non-Microsoft applications will have their own steps for connecting to your Outlook.com email account using modern authentication methods. See our help article - Modern Authentication Methods now needed to continue syncing Outlook Email in non-Microsoft email apps. However, you may need to contact the creators of those applications to provide you with instructions. In many cases, simply removing and re-adding your account with the latest version of that application will configure it to use modern authentication methods.

Thanks so much for all that you guys do.

I think Mail with Outlook/Office365 servera - #9 by tcecyk still applies. Linking for tracking the count how often this crops up.

TL;DR it woule be a 2 line fix (with a dedicated client id too).

Workaround still is to use the regular k9mail

Our fork of Mail is incredibly out of sync with upstream K-9, which has long had the OAUTH2 fix.

And until /e/ get round to updating their fork, you can just use K-9 (which is available from F-Droid) and follow the steps in this post:

it’s not update lag from forking, the oauth2 implementation is sufficient. It’s breakage from the appid rename. Will stay broken if those 2 build config strings stay untouched.

Maybe the September deprecation date will warrant a second look

My mistake - apologies! The update lag from forking not responsible for that particlular bug or missing feature

I am also an Outlook user and have also received the aforementioned email. I failed to update my email accounts to Oauth2.0 authentication, even with different browsers. Outlook tells me everything has been set up correctly but Mail still waits for some success value /token I assume. I hope if several persons manifest the same issue, that it may been fixed someday

Is this the behavior that is meant in the original post?

In Mail I can set authentication to OAuth 2.0. When I do a webpage is opened in the browser (I installed Edge, but it seems to give the problem as with Firefox). It states: Are you trying to sign in to K-9 Mail? With the buttons Cancel and Continue.

When I click on continue, I get a pop up saying “account.live.com” wants to open an external app. With the buttons ‘Stay on MS Edge’ and ‘Open External App’. No matter which button I click, I end up again on the 'Are you trying to sign in to K-9 Mail? ’ page.

Is this the behavior that is meant in the original post?
So at this time the solution is to install the original K9 mail app alongside E/OS mail?

Same issue. I am hoping for the fix to be patched in the K-9 fork used by /e/OS. Using the Outlook App in the meantime but it cant read contacts stored in my Murena account.
