Moto G7 Power (ocean) with /e/OS 2.5 Review

this text was written with deepl, sorry if it has errors. a spanish version of this review can be found here.

I wanted to tell you about my experience with this phone and using /e/OS. The G7 Power is a mid-range phone from Motorola that came out in 2019 and is from the G7 family. The biggest difference with the G7 is its screen, camera and battery: the G7 power has less resolution, a single camera but a powerful 5000mah battery; both have the same 1.8GHz Snapdragon 632 processor. The model I got at about 50 thousand ARS pesos (say, 45-50 USD) is the 3GB RAM and 32GB storage version, there is a 4GB RAM and 64 storage version but I could not get it. The battery is in perfect condition and the phone in general as well, just marks of use.

In Argentina, the G7 Power, and the G7 family in general, is very popular, and you can get them in facebook marketplace between 50-80 thousand pesos, depending on the model of the family and the state.

General information

The phone runs the latest version of /e/OS with its updates up to date, running Android 13 and according to the system roadmap, it will be updated to /e/OS 2.6 and upgraded to Android 14. With the last update, I noticed an improvement in the performance of the phone, which was already running very well, despite having only 3 GB of RAM: around this, the OTA update worked smoothly. On the other hand, the 5000mah battery has an exceptional performance: it can easily last a day and a half, or two, without charging, with normal use of the phone. Of course, this excellent battery performance is given by the fact of not using proprietary applications, beyond Whatsapp and digital banking applications. In general terms the phone with /e/OS works great and I have been using it for 1 month of daily use.

What works

As I use mostly free applications I don’t have many problems as they all work. For work and social issues I use Whatsapp, download the apk from the web and is updated from Aurora Store. I also use two digital banking apps: Banco Macro and Banco Galicia: both work. I also installed Uber and corroborated that it works but it has erratic behavior, sometimes it doesn’t load the map well, the car path blurs from the map, but still in the background it is running. Organics Maps and GPS work perfect.

What does NOT work

The digital wallet application “MODO” installs but when the app asks me to validate my biometric data using the camera to scan my face, it tells me “Device not suitable for analysis”. Other than that, I haven’t encountered any problems or bugs.

Battery

As I mentioned, the 5000mah battery allows a very long battery life, even more limiting the use of proprietary social networks that consume a lot of battery (and processing).

Conclusions

It is a wonderful phone to use with /e/OS and that can be obtained for little money and in relatively good condition. It’s really worth buying a second hand one, and I’m even thinking of getting another one, as a backup in case it breaks, because I’m really very happy with the experience. The only “bad” thing is the camera, it is not of good quality, it is very outdated for the current era: the G6 has a better camera than this one, but as I say, here we are paying for the huge 5000mah battery. I look forward to the update to Android 14, to see how it performs with that new version. Undoubtedly, it’s a great phone to use on a day-to-day basis, as I’ve been doing.
