My wish list for /e/

Hi,
my wish for the /e/ OS would be:
implementing an option to limit the recharging (i.e. to 85% of the battery capacity) in order to extend battery life. This option is already available on standard Android OS (I saw it on the Samsung device ‘Galaxy A32 5G’). So hopefully you will add this option soon. Actually I waited for that you would implement such an option after a while and expected it kind of. I bought an Fairphone 4 with /e / OS also because of ecological reasons. It would be very nice to have a longer battery life. Besides that I don’t have any complaints. The FP4 and /e/ OS work great! Thanks for developing and publishing the OS and thanks for your efforts in degoogling! Cheers
Edit: I am using the actual version

In the posts just above it seems this is possible with the newer android base that is coming.

https://spot.murena.io is not a relevant, well-known, successful search engine provider. The current standard search engine in the e-browser delivers very unsatisfactory results! Cobbler, stick to your last!

Adding other search engines in the browser:
https://search.demoniak.ch/
https://www.startpage.com/
https://metager.de/

The first search engine mentioned here is a searx instance in Switzerland. Switzerland has very strong data protection rights. Depending on the country selection, a different searx instance could be chosen here: https://searx.space/

Yes, that’s always said. But Switzerland has also a long tradition in mass surveillance (since 2006, if I remember well). Switzerland has been a European pioneer in data retention for future reference and does this without interruption still today. And you will never know for what. Nobody talks about this.

Thanks for this objection, those who avoid Swiss servers may prefer to use https://freesearch.club/ in the Netherlands.

My biggest wishes is to be able to add widget on the desktop !!

/e/OS supports installing a launcher of your choice, other launchers offer adding widgets on the home screen :person_shrugging:.

/e/OS brings everything I daily need, is really reliable now, and I’m pretty happy with it on my FP4! (Thanks to the whole team).

Maybe the only “must have” missing feature would be a “kinda” fork of Android Auto that will enable to mirror apps on cars infotainments (especially navigation). But I know it’s pretty hard to set up due to Google’s proprietary APIs.

If possible, Please add the Signal-FOSS app to the App Lounge. It is an Signal-App alternative fdroidrepos://fdroid.twinhelix.com/fdroid/repo?fingerprint=7B03B0232209B21B10A30A63897D3C6BCA4F58FE29BC3477E8E3D8CF8E304028

I am using /e/OS on a FP5 and i really love the cooperation that you have with Fairphone (hope you will keep it up)!

My wish would be:
Have you considered to release a small Android phone in this cooperation, e.g. in iPhone Mini size? As there is a lack of offer in the market, Eric Migicovsky opened up an online petition on this (https://smallandroidphone.com/) and it is highly supported by many (>40000 followers), including me.
As a side effect, /e/OS could likely win more users/get the attention of the community that desires smaller smartphones again, which comfortably fit into a pocket and are more easy (+ healthier) for one hand to hold.

I think there is not enough demand for small phones. One of the last ones was Zenfone from Asus (worse is they also made bootloader unlock impossible…) and the succesor to it is a bigger phone now. But I am all for that Murena releases a smaller phone or even kickstarts it again. It would be an instant buy from me.

I’m almost done migrating away from /e/ but I thought it might be worth it to leave one last post here.

I would have liked to see murenacloud blossom and come along further in the past few years, but it seems to have degraded instead. My wishes for all you /e/ users: sync that actually works across all features: photos/docs/contacts/calendar/etc, 100% reliably with little downtime. Email/Snappymail that performs faster than it does, and servers that are rarely down and not afflicted with ‘request is aborted’ error messages, or murenacloud servers just being down period.

/e/ OS is one of the better offerings out there, but the phone ↔ murenacloud synergy is just not good enough to waste anymore time on. I’ve found that using Lineage again and ‘rolling my own’ is just about equal to all the additional band-aids I’ve had to use with /e/ OS as it sits.

I’ll keep an eye on /e/, who knows it may come around the corner. Hopefully something else comes along before that.

How about turning WiFi-Scanning off by default?
I’m not certain if this is even a privacy concern on /e/ (while it is on googled phone).

And pull from middle of display to access quick settings instead of from top would be nice.

Hi Klaas, your provided link is broken ?!?

Oh sorry should have read the date …

This sounds like normal App usage (moving a map, scrolling in browsers or messengers).
How would the OS know that a user wants to have the quick settings instead and not interact with the App they are using?

The name has changed to Open Android Backup: https://www.openandroidbackup.me.
(Important to know when you restore the backup, a zip-file, the path to the file has to be without apostrophes. I made the ‘mistake’ to drag and drop the file to the terminal, and then you get ‘pathtofile.zip’). Open Android Backup backs up pretty much everything, but not e-mails. With root privileges it could take the e-mail data too, in theory.
If you want full access to your droid, you’d have to root it with Magisk and take a backup solution like Neo Backup.

I mean on home screen only (similarly to Trebuchet does).

Ah, I see.
In case the new Bliss launcher version coming up doesn’t offer this, it looks like Trebuchet will be installable from /e/OS 2.0 on … Week 16 2024: Development and Testing Updates - #11 by Manoj

Thanks.
That would be nice.
I was thinking that installing Trebuchet itself (which is already well known by many users) might be easier, because there is too many launchers out there that we can hardly know which one works better until we try each of them.

I dream of having only one secure, as can be device for my phone and desktop needs.
I would like a desktop environment to be made like Samsung DEX. DEX can’t do everything but it accomplishes 90% of my needs.

Secondly a faux android play for the car.
