New device advice for a newbie. longevity, safetynet…

Hi everyone,

I would kindly ask for help in choosing my new device with e os . In my short list there are S9+ Oneplus 8PRO and Pixel 5
.i would become my daily driver and I’d like to hold it as many years as possible
.i fear easy install is the only reasonable option for me (….very newbie)
.not sure how to consider the safetynet warning that concerns one+8Pro. I tried to understand the matter here in the forum but i m still not able to say if i will have my bank app…or in general if at the end it really matters or not that much……

Any other suggestions that could match my criteria would be very welcome (especially for a newer phone that could last longer). I guess I would go FP if i had the money.

Thanks a lot,
ST

Not sure about the safety warning of the OnePlus but Pixel phones are easy to install.

This initiative was about getting users to test phones with /e/OS in service with SafetyNet and RootBeerFresh apps and report the result. My understanding is that the image reports that conclusive results have not been obtained for this device.

Scrot-SafetyNet

Samsungs are great phones but suffer from proprietary firmware resulting in Camera images not being as good as on stock ROM and Volte issues. Volte is severely a blocker in USA. In Europe use of Volte is much more carrier dependent.

Don’t buy a Samsung. Once 3g networks are turned off, it will no longer be able to make calls, as the Samsung VoLTE (i.e. making calls using your 4g data connection) implementation is closed source, and has not been made to work for any custom ROM.

When 3g networks get turned off depends on where you live, and on your network operator. It has already happened for some networks in USA.

We are awaiting a “new” Easy Installer (and the current one is being reported buggy, easy-installer, currently shows 6 active / unresolved reports in past 5 days).

As there are reported 86 devices offered by Supported Devices | OpenAndroidInstaller their list would open the door to a greater selection of /e/OS compatible devices Smartphone Selector

There are places in Europe where 3g turnoff has also begun. e.g 3g switched off by Vodafone in the big cities in Ireland so Samsung not great for anyone planning to travel.

For all U.S. networks already, I believe. T-mobile USA still has some 2G, though, for now.

EDIT: T-mobile plans to start shutting down 2G in September 2024, probably not everywhere all at once.

Hello @Tagliaboschi welcome to the forum.

  • When looking at your shortlist I’d go for a FP (in case you want to afford one), otherwise I’d opt for the Pixel 5. Still a very good phone - long lasting battery, very good build quality.

  • For a compatibility check, have a look whether you find your banking app in this list: [LIST] Apps that work or do not work with microG

The Google Pixel 5 (5G), especially the GD1YQ model, is still a very good choice for North America.

The GD1YQ supports significantly more frequencies than the instantnoodlep, especially in the 5G network.

4G bands: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, 32, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 46, 48, 66, 71 - GD1YQ
4G bands: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, 34, 38, 39, 40, 41, 46, 48, 66, 71 - NA OP8Pro
5G bands: 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 12, 28, 41, 66, 71, 77, 78, 258, 260, 261 Sub6/mmWave - UW (Ultra Wideband) GD1YQ
5G bands: 2, 5, 41, 66, 71 SA/NSA - NA OP8Pro

The bootloader can also be relocked. There are also counter-arguments to this feature:.

The Pixels are excellent choice for NA. I have done 4a5g through to the Pixel 7. The 5 and the 4a5g are very close in chipsets but the 4a5g has the bigger screen (6.2"), both have the rear fingerprint reader. Above the 5 the fingerprint reader is onscreen, a feature I don’t care for. My daily is the 4a5g and I love it.

Thank you all guys, i really appreciated your help. So it will be pixel for me.

a last question, if i may… i have a very very old asus zenphone 2 laser that i tried to put back in use in the urge of a phone. It was still working before a resetted it. After the reset it is stuck in the installation process. It won’t let me enter my google account any longer, it continuosly gives me a bizarre error (kind of “try again in 24h, because the password was chaged too recentely” ).
I tought it could have been useful to me to have a kind of back up solution during the adaptation time to a degoogled life.
Do you guys see a reasonnable way to bring that to life again or it is not worth trying?
