New Fairphone e/os Users

I have thought of 2 more questions. I like to have different browsers installed so that I can, in a basic way, sandbox things. I also use Firejail on Linux. I use LibreWolf, Mullvad browser and some other different browsers. Is the browser that comes with the FP5 ok or are there better alternatives? And can I backup the phone locally once it is set up?

The preinstalled browser that comes with /e/ is a fork of Cromite, Cromite is a fork of Bromite, Bromite was a fork of Chromium, the open-source background version of Chrome. The /e/ browser is because of that always a bit behind the current development. Good to install an own one you get updates for. I used also Mull for a while but I had more and more websites having rendering problems with Mull where the original /e/ browser had no problem at all.

I never did a whole backup of my device. I store some single files on a safe place.

I am not an experienced whole-system-backupper as well but you will find some threads on this topic in this forum.
Seems to make much of a difference whether your phone is rooted or not though…
The latest thread that catched my attention (as it is about local backup for the nonrooted) is this one (it´s in German - but deepl is your friend…)

I am really sorry as I am sure that this is a really stupid question. But, I have deleted a few files - just photos and docs, and I can’t find the trash folder to empty. I like to do this, as soon as I have finished deleting items. I checked hidden folders but, still couldn’t find it. I assume that there is one?

Re banks, a number of our banks had problems with their apps yesterday. So, people relying on them exclusively might have had problems. But, our browser based banking worked just fine.

Good question … To my knowledge, there is no native system-wide recycle bin in Android.
(more knowledgeable people please correct me if I’m wrong)

There may be ways to restore or permanently delete per app content if an app offers such a function for its content, like e.g. integrated messages-app or some file explorer-apps etc. (in this case, search in the app menu or settings)

How can I move files to (for example) /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.zinuzoi.xcsoar_jet/files/. ? (without rooting my Faiphone 5)

I remember now. It can be done with adb.

Update on my migration from iPhone to Fairphone. Thanks again for all of your help.

Email, Calendar and cloud storage - I am up and running on most things. My proton apps that I was already using are fine.
News - I am using NewsBlur for my news and it much better that using different apps (BBC News and the The Register via a browser) as I was before. It is great to get my news all aggregated together.
Messaging - did not install WhatsApp but, just tried to encourage my existing WhatsApp contacts to move to Signal or test me, in the future. So far, I have 4 signal contacts!
Mapping - I have organic maps and magic maps. I have not tested them much yet but, they look fine for my needs.
Mullvad - as before, for my VPN. I wasn’t sure whether to just rely on the phone, perhaps I don’t really need a separate vpn on this phone - what do you think?
I am using some apps that came with the phone - Music, Notes & Tasks. All good.
File sharing -1 thing though. I did have a lot of problems trying to set up KDE Connect / GSconnect to connect my phone to my Fedora laptop. So, I just ordered a usbc SanDisk pen drive instead to transfer files, and Proton Drive.
I am gradually getting accustomed to Android and find some things are better. I would not hesitate to recommend the fairphone to Apple users who are disappointed with the move away from security / privacy that Apple is being compelled to take.
I will still use my apple devices for basic tasks - “off cloud” and will avoid signing into Apple, unless absolutely necessary.

Depends on your why for the VPN-service. Nothing wrong with mullvad in my opinion (I am not a user though)
BTW, one needs to know there is only one single VPN-interface (sometimes referred to as slot) available in android that can be used by apps - only one at a time.
Are you using all or just some or none of the Advanced Privacy features? I am asking because the Hide my IP-function would use up the only one available VPN-slot of the device anyways.

(There´s a bunch of interesting apps that rely on the VPN-slot that can be used on top of the AP-features (except HmIP), like personalDNSfilter (rather simple piHole-like function), rethinkDNS (dito + firewall etc., rather extended), netguard (extended firewall) and more…)

I did not like it much either (win-PC) I usually rely on wired USB-connection or localsend (an app).

good start

Related to the topic of Linux/e-connectivity: there should be a package on Linux called android-file-transfer (this is the name on my Arch) or similar. This is a GUI Linux application which allows pumping files in both directions. Not very luxurious but does the job very well without a SanDisk drive between.

I’m familiar with RSS reading. A problem is always when you have multiple devices (a PC at work, a PC at home, a mobile, a tablet). That’s why I never used a reader app on my mobile. My feeds are online in The Old Reader, and this website knows very well what feeds I have and which articles I did read, also on multiple devices.

Mullvad? When you have a paid account for other devices you should use it. Shouldn’t be a problem on a mobile. Depends on how much you do in Web on your phone.

Just to say, am very happy with my phone. I am now considering getting a tablet at some point., to replace my iPad. Do you have one, or just the phone?

I have a phone for mobile (outdoor) use and several desktop machines on different places and in different sizes for stationary use. The latter includes almost all my internet browsing. My mobile phone is not my window to the world because of it’s small screen, it’s rather my primary communication device (and camera, and music player, and navigation platform). I never had a tablet. This is also because I never stream ridiculous American TV series from American platforms.

Again it breaks down to your needs and usecase… I just flashed eOS onto a second hand Samsung TabS5 to test and see whether I will use it in the long run.
It works perfectly so far and I like it - even though I am not sure if I really need it - because my main mobile device is and will be my phone - not least because of its size…
(and also because it is e.g. not possible to mirror signal (or molly) onto a second android device like one can mirror it to a desktop-pc via a desktop-application.)

Same here, phone for communications, PC for everything else. That small screen is trouble for me. Plus typing on a touch keyboard is a problem. I know most people are fine with using a phone for everything, but being older and using a PC most of my life, I just can’t adapt.

I suppose a tablet would be good if you don’t have a PC, but otherwise it would be redundant, at least for me.

I feel that I must point out that I don’t want a tablet for streaming media, which I hardly ever do. I use my phone almost exactly like you do yours. We use a couple of older laptops as banking / admin machines that only access specific websites needed for banking

/ home admin - no browsing.

But, I have an old iPad with vpn that I use for browsing, reading magazines from my library and ChatGPT. That is the one that I was thinking of replacing with an E/OS tablet.

My iPad is no longer logged into iCloud and will remain that way. So, sooner or later, the remaining apps that I use on it will stop working because they need to be updated. I don’t feel comfortable about logging into icloud again, even just for updates.

Just checked, and the e/os pixels are out of stock right now anyway.

Is it complicated to install e/os on a tablet. I could get second hand or older one and try it. That would be a lot cheaper that buying new from Murena. If I did, do you know which tablet would be the most compatible?

Yes, just try it!
It was doable for me which means in total it was not all too complicated, still it was a steep learning curve, mostly about being brave enough to just go for it (it was the second device I flashed so that mostly applies to my previous device as I already had some experience when I started the tablet) and in hindsight it´s much easier than it reads in the beginning…
The howtos and tutorials in the forum are good enough for a beginner like I once was.
Here´s a good starting point as you need a compatible device anyways…(search options: filter for “device type: tablet”)
(I chose the Samsung TabS5 because I got it for a very reasonable price and the hardware-specs are not too “old” and there´s not too many tablets in the list anyways and one could say that Samsungs are rather costom-Rom-friendly - from what I perceive…if you have a device in mind it´s worth checking the device-specific threads in the forum for typical errors or issues that might be manufacturer- or device-specific or other hints)
It´s definitely worth reading a bit before actually doing it in order to get a well enough mental picture about what you´re actually doing in the process of flashing a custom Rom - well it was for me… and then set up your equipment and download everything beforehand etc. so you can focus on the process later here´s my report.
I did it with a win-pc, no experience doing it with linux but as soon as you drop your help request (in case you need help) in the device specific area you´ll be amazed how much support you get
