New SIM card not got active, due to missing LTE actication

Hi,

I’m using a Samsung Galaxy S8 (SM-G950F) with /e/OS 3.4-s-202601114569182-official-dramlte on Andoid 12 (the current version for my phone). My provider is MUCHO, who is based on the swisscom network (the leading national provider). When I inserted the new MUCHO SIM card, it has not got activated, so I can’t establish or receive phone calls. The MUCHO Helpline only told me to activate the Voice over LTE (VoLTE) in a specified menue, where I was not able to find such an LTE option.

So I started researching whether my phone is LTE-capable at all in terms of hardware.

a) The information I have found is confusing. I currently do not know whether my hardware is actually LTE-capable or not.

b) Then there’s the /e/OS, which actually has “dreamLTE” in its name. For me this is as an indication that LTE is supported. In the specifications for a Fairphone, I then read “VoLTE, if supported by the provider.”

c) So, ultimately, all that remains is the provider, which I assume supports 4G/LTE.

But still, my new SIM card is not active, no calls, no internet on the go.

Can someone help me and explain why this is the case, which system is blocking? I just want to understand. And please note that I am just a ordinary user and not a tech nerd. Thanks a lot!

All Samsungs lose VoLTE-capability if any custom ROM like /e/OS is installed. (If the specific model had it in the first place; most older phones didn’t.)

Search for “Samsung Volte” here in the forums.

By the way…
LTE (data) is not the same as “Voice over LTE” (VoLTE). VoLTE is a specific calling technology that is carried over LTE data networks. (As a simplified explanation.)

This refers to the fact that not all phone manufacturers have necessarily had all their phone models approved for VoLTE with all service providers worldwide.

For networks that still have 2G or 3G networks, lack of VoLTE in a device will cause the phone to fall back to one of those networks for calls. If they don’t exist anymore, then a non-VoLTE phone has nothing to fall back to for calls.

Carriers that require VoLTE capability frequently block activation of non-VoLTE phones on their networks.
