New to e/os - Proton or Murena Cloud

Hello everyone,

I installed e/OS on my Fairphone a few days ago. Now I’m wondering which cloud service I should use. I currently use Google and mainly use the cloud to store my photos, calendars, and contacts; I don’t have my email with Google. The question I’m now asking myself is whether I should use Murena Cloud or Proton. I have some security concerns with Murena Cloud because there was a bug in the Papst where a few users could see other people’s files, and as far as I know, the drive is not E2EE. However, integration with e/OS should be better with Murena. What are you currently using? Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you very much for your help.

Hi,
I’ve never tried Murena.
Proton is good and secure but you need to subscribe to a plan to get reasonable storage space.
I’ve been using Mega for ages so I keep using it. I trust them and their free plan allows you up to 50 Gb storage. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hello,
As for me, I have both services on my Fairphone 6.
I use Murena Workspace for contacts, calendars, and notes.
For storage and email, I rely on Proton because of its encryption, alias management, and storage‑cost advantages.
I can access my Proton files through the native Files app, so integration isn’t an issue.
Finally, for photos I currently use Proton Drive, but I’m looking for an alternative since the service isn’t quite up to par yet.

I self-host and would recommend it above all third party cloud services.

I do that too; I save stuff on external drives but I’m not carrying them everywhere. Online storing has its usefulness. :slightly_smiling_face:

I think you misunderstand me. I have a PC in my house which runs internet facing services. All of my stuff is accessible via a web browser from anywhere in the world.

I’m in a similar situation with Murena and Proton. How did you get Murena to synchronise only contacts and not photos?

This is the documentation page

How does eDrive sync work?.

Many help pages are found from Support topics,
and in light of the thread title eOSWiki > Getting Started.

Okay, it took me a while to find it and understand it, but I think I’ve got it now.

Thank you very much.

Mega.io sounds intresting, 20GB free storage testing :+1:. Cheaper then Filen.io

Thanks.

I guess it was 50 Gb when I joined because my free plan allows me 50 Gb. :stuck_out_tongue: I was right to stick to them.

Murena alleen voor de contacten agenda en notities, foto en video naar mega, documenten naar GMX is ff instellen maar dan heb je niet te snel een vol loper

Would you mind to post your mesaage in English language, please.

Alternatively, youay send a DM if your message is not of general interest.

Excuse autotranslate in english

Murena only for the contacts calendar and notes, photo and video to mega, documents to GMX is ff set up but then you don’t have a full runner too quickly

If you are looking at options for cloud storage, I think it’s important to consider reliability! Murena had an almost 6 month outage, with no access to your files. While it is working now, there wasn’t really a transparent/public “post mortem” on what they are doing differently now to prevent it from happening again.

I have proton and like their broader security/privacy offers, including storage. Because all of Proton drive is e2e encrypted, you cant use it for device/app data backup.

For e/os, I found KOOFR to be a good fit: they have an encrypted vault, as well as storage without e2e that you can use with WebDav, for example to store your device backup or app data backup. KOOFR has a “local drive” feature, which allows you to store some data, ie large files, movies, at home on your own PC and access via internet, without setting up your own NAS. Another unusual feature is that you can link Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive storage to KOOFR, so you could access your data on Google Drive via KOOFR, without having to transfer them. They also offer inexpensive lifetime deals, significantly cheaper than Murena or Proton.

If you have mostly photos, Ente is also an option, with photo features and cloud storage similar to Google Photos.
