Notes App does not load - where to find locally stored notes?

hi!
Everytime I try to open my Notes app (foundation.e.notes), it shows me only the loading Icon. When I try to add a note via the blue plus sign, this forces the message “No account set up yet”. Plot twist: I only used the local storage of the app and never synced it… Now I’m using the Nextcloud notes app, but I would be happy to retrieve my old notes somehow.

Here comes a bit more detailed description:

A while ago, I tried to add all my nextcloud and e-mail accounts through the /e/OS settings WebDAV interface. For this, I temporarily deinstalled the DAVx5 app. However, I didn’t get it to work through the settings only (seemed buggy and WebDAV is not what I want), so now I’m back to using the DAVx5 app again. Now, when I try to open the Notes app, I can’t get past the loading icon.

Solution attempts tried so far:

  • restarting my phone, with and without flight mode
  • Searching for the foundation.e.notes folder (which I couldn’t find anywhere)
  • Connecting to my murena account and hoping that it would magically sync
  • looking for the foundation.e.notes folder via adb (“permission denied” even though I activated USB-debugging). I have no experience with tools like adb, so I might have overlooked something

Technical details:
Pixel 7 with /e/OS 3.1.1 (official build) | Notes app: v3.7.4

Thanks in advance!

  • not available to you: for anti-root reasons, official build shouldn’t have adb root available - that’s what you’d need to pull that folder and extract from sqlite directly
  • the Notes fork has .json Export in the settings, but you can’t get past the startup screen. In any case I’d expect that once you get there and can’t see the local notes anymore, they could be in the json export
  • you can try different states of Settings → Accounts (empty, murena type) to see how the startup of Notes behaves. It does look for the murena webdav account type - that you could supply

I’ve been a broken record on this one, but for all those reasons I’m just not a fan of the way the Notes app is built. Files first, that’s the motto

Thanks for your suggestions but yes, pulling the folder is not possible (I tried it). The json export doesn’t work as long as I don’t get past the loading screen. I tried adding WebDAV and murena Accounts ang giving them the needed permissions, but that did not make a difference :frowning:

Thank you nonetheless for your answer!
