A practical example from a reputable source: Install …OS on Nothing Phone (1) Spacewar

:warning: WARNING: Before following these instructions please ensure that the device is currently using Android 15 firmware.

If the vendor provided multiple updates for that version, e.g. security updates, make sure you are on the latest!

If your current installation is newer or older than Android 15, please upgrade or downgrade to
the required version before proceeding (guides can be found on the internet!).

Now that E/OS 2.8 is available for this device, can we simply install that one over the existing install or do we need to do a clean install?

Of course you can update without wiping anything,
from recovery mode or from the built-in system-updater local update feature…

I simply initiated an OTA update via Updater > three dots > search for update (if necessary, tap several times until the update is found and displayed.

The download is faster than per WLAN / Wi-Fi via LAN RJ45 USB-C adapter.

The local update option gives an error … alas.

I the retried with recovery… see my other reply.

Then suddenly it appeared it the OTA list. Now trying that…And SUCCESS!

recovery states:

  • footer is wrong
  • Signature verification failed
  • error 21
  • couldn’t access state file
  • Failed to find update binary META-INF/com//google/android/update-binary
  • etc
    aborted

Whats up?

OTA update worked in the end… No idea why manual update would not work in both described ways

/e/OS v2.8 OTA_update went smoothly for me.

Can also report the OTA update process worked on my CMF 1. So far no issues to report either.

Just updated to 2.8:

  • I hadn’t and haven’t experienced any stutters anymore.
  • tapping on the screen wakes it up now! That is great!
  • I had the occasional screen freeze. This also appears to have been adressed in the new release as stated in the release notes. Display freeze has been fixed by disabling dynamic display: refresh rate is now 60Hz by default and can be changed in the Settings , but I just had my first freeze…
  • Camera app is not as bad as I thought it would be. I can live with it. Original Nothing cam app was more versatile though and better for night photos

Wel I think I can manage with the camera app. As I stated I expected it to be worse. I tried hedgecam earlier but could not quite see the advantages. Maybe I will try again.

I installed this rom on my CMF Phone 1 (tetris) yesterday - all is working fine including finger print. I had to dump Revolut because it requires google’s safetynet - I only used revolut once so no loss. So thanks loads devs, good to be rid of google.

Has anyone else being experiencing an issue with alarms seemingly freezing the lock screen which then leads to me holding the power button until it reboots? Otherwise it’s good.

The :warning: refers to the usual advice seen on install pages, mentioned in Post #62, to install on top of a specific version of stock firmware.

There is a further comment on this matter as mentioned on XDA (from our very own Sahil_Sonar) Development [ROM][STABLE][tetris][14] /e/OS for CMF Phone 1

Installation steps:

Note: Builds ships with stock firmware, no need to be on specific firmware version.

This quote is from the OP of that thread, one might read the whole thread or ask there for further reassurance before proceeding.

  • (To be clear, I do not know the device, but I observe that install is done by a Fastboot flash script, in a similar way to the /e/ install of Fairphones.)
