We manage a desktop environment which has no access to the internet for reasons I’ll not get into here but now have a requirement for an instant messaging client which can do file and screen sharing.
Are there any out there? I’m convinced I’m searching all the results point to things and found this blog Best Instant Messaging Platforms
in case you are talking of some sort of intranet that shares the same wifi but w/o connection to the outside… give localsend a try. Not exactly a “messenger” but capable of exchanging messages and files.
Edit: Ah sorry, I missed the screensharing part, my bad…
I’ll second the notion that an all-in-one tool is probably going to be a bit too tall of an order here.
Similarly, I’ll second RustDesk as a recommendation for the screen sharing solution - that it can self-host the server component is probably its biggest differentiator; I’m unaware of a similar solution which provides that functionality.
In terms of an IM solution, I think RocketChat would be your best best under the circumstances.
In terms of file sharing…please God, don’t turn your IM solution into a file repository. Rocketchat can handle this, but oh BOY is it a nightmare!! Use folder shares the way God intended, because finding files and handling versions is an atrocious nightmare that will only cause problems down the road…which file? paste the folder path and let people work on it internally…or allocate 2TB to the Rocketchat server and prepare for the world’s worst game of version hell.
if it’s something that interests you, rocketchat.net has all the information about their pricing structure. They have a free community/OSS version, as well as a paid support model, depending on the needs of the environment you’re adding it to.
