Hi,
I’m preparing for installing /e/OS on a oneplus nord 5 from a windows11-pc.
Some things I found out so far:

  1. “Default USB configuration” has to be set to PTP to be able to connect with adb.

  2. fastboot doesn’t work by just installing Platform Tools. I eventually got it working by following this guide: https://droidwin.com/how-to-install-fastboot-drivers-in-windows-11/
If you wouldn’t trust the download in step 5, you can also get this file by installing Google USB driver with the SDK manager of Android Studio (see https://developer.android.com/studio/run/win-usb)

  3. preparing for the next step I read there’s supposed to be a init_boot.img in the recovery-download. This doesn’t seem to be the case? Is it missing or is it not needed for this phone? I’d like to know before I dare to continue.

    kind regards,

One can look for and extract init_boot.img in the ROM itself with payload-dumper-go as described [Walkthrough] Extract eRecovery and boot images using payload-dumper-go.

Hi @aibd

Thanks for the quick answer. I’m new to this so I’d like to get some more information as I don’t want to brick the phone. To what ROM are you referring? Do you mean the stock ROM and if so what would be a trustable source? Oneplus itself doesn’t seem to offer it on their website. Or would getting the init_boot.img from LineageOS Downloads also work for /e/OS?

This method is to extract the component from the build, the /e/OS ROM, you plan to install.

If there is a same Android version Lineage init_boot.img you could try that.

Hi,

I finally tried it and I think it was successful. I say “think” because after flashing I got the message “Total xfer: 1.00x” in the command-window but on the device there was an error-message. As I didn’t really know how to continue I did a reboot and I got booted right into /e/OS. I haven’t thoroughly tested yet but at first sight everything seems to work.

Can I consider this installation to be successful or should I do it again given the error message I got?

Also, I see there’s an update to e-3.7.1 (I installed 3.7). Can I run this from the device as with an official installation?

Good to hear of your success following thorough preparation. :slightly_smiling_face:

This is success.

Elsewhere one might see a message like

“Completed with error 0”
or
“adb complete signal failed, error 0”

This means “no reported error”.

Errors with other integers would probably result in no boot. The fact that First boot and First start wizard proceeds is pretty likely to indicate a complete success.

Yes it will install with no problem. I just did it myself on a community build.

ok, thanks! great to hear to that

maybe one more question: is it possible to lock bootloader again after this proces? and if so, is it advisable to do this (and where can I find instructions)?

if not, the screen you get when starting up the phone with the message “this is phone is unlocked and should not be trusted” will always be there? or is there a way to dissable this message?

no,
there are no instruction there : Install /e/OS on a OnePlus Nord 5 - “lexus”
relocking is only possible for a few “official” builds

I agree with point 3. The description how to install is not really clear which results into a boot loop for me. Luckily I had a professional friend available to fix it.
The steps seems to be general, not specific written for the oneplus nord 5.

Hello,
I’m thinking about buying the device and installing the operating system on it. But first I want to make sure that the OS is working properly.

  1. Can someone please share their experience here as to whether everything works completely and well after installation?
  2. In the installation instructions under “Try the /e/OS Recovery” it says “(limited functionality)”. I would like to know what this limited functionality refers to and to what extent the functionality is limited? Is it just about recovery or the entire operating system? Thanks.

This should ideally be reworded. The wording remains from an earlier transition … up until about Android 12 TWRP (FAQ) was the standard custom recovery (others are and were available). Since A13 TWRP has not been officially updated for most devices. Lack of updates is covered in TWRP FAQ.

e-recovery is a simplified recovery which has all the standard functions one would want for install and simple recovery jobs.
