Phasing out the .io domain

The .io top level domain, widely used in tech related organisations, might be phased out in the upcoming years.

For references, regarding the origin and future of the IO domain :

For reference, regarding IANA’s rules and procedures to phase out TLDs :

As a side note, I was not able to find any statement or announcement from Murena regarding the distant future of murena.io and associated cloud services. If any relevant post exists somewhere, I’d be happy to edit this message to include it as a reference.

It seems there will be quite some time to react, if there would be a need to react at all. After all, the .io domain might just continue to exist.
You linked to The Disappearance of an Internet Domain … from a comment there …

Is the .io top level domain headed for extinction? – Computerworld has an initial comment from IANA, pretty non-committal. Not at all clear what they’re going to do yet.’

From Is the .io top level domain headed for extinction? – Computerworld

'Edwards’ advice to any organization that might be impacted is this: “There’s no need for anyone with an .io domain to panic. The IANA may decide to fudge their own rules and keep the domain going, perhaps assigned to Mauritius instead, or by turning it into a generic, non-country domain. Even if they decide to deprecate it, this will be managed over multiple years.”

However, he added, “If an organization has made .io part of their identity, though, then it may be time to at least think about a brand review.”’

I don’t see a brand problem here, so … relax, wait and see.
I personally would like to see Mauritius and the remaining Chagossians getting good money or something else useful out of this.

Wow, I had no idea. Great article and thanks for bringing this to my awareness.

Absolutely, the IANA rules indeed specify that this is a multiple steps process over several years, but now that you say it I realize my initial wording might let one think that this is urgent matter. I’ll amend to lift this ambiguity and include the link you provided in the references

I kinda share your hope here but that might not be the stand of Mauritius on the matter, since the name itself comes from a very painful part of their history. Time will tell !

Another insight from Hackaday :

Long story short? There are questions around the future of .io, but nothing’s been decided yet. Expect vested interests to make sure it sticks around for the foreseeable future.
