Pixel 4a / sunfish / add a second eSIM

Hi all;
I am having a problem using / adding a second sim (eSIM) to a Pixel 4a.

The spec (from google) says it is possible, eOS version (sunfish 1.21-r-20240323388914-stable) is compatible I think,

I saw some people sayong it was working.

When I go to “Network and Connectivity” / Network /
It is said I should see a + sign, for adding a eSIM… But I can’t see / find it ?

Any tought ?

Thanks a lot !
Vivien

Hi @lukhe welcome to the /e/ forum.

This seems to be a device where upgrade to the Official or stable /e/OS ROM beyond Android 11 (R) was stopped /e/OS stable sunfish download.

The only opportunity to Upgrade to Android 13(T) seems to be to change to a Community aka dev build type.

Download from /e/OS dev sunfish download. The official advice is to treat this as a new install Install /e/OS on a Google Pixel 4a - “sunfish” and upgrade the phone to manufacturer firmware to Android 13 (T) first

Before following these instructions please ensure that the device is on the latest Android 13 firmware.

Also available Android Flash Tool and GitHub - CalyxOS/device-flasher

I expect the old Android version is the reason.

Edit: added quote to what I disagree with

I need to disagree with you. I started using eSim a year ago. With R stable installed on it (Then in October I switched to dev with your help)

@lukhe Could you share a picture?

Hi ! Soory for the disappearance,

Here some pictures of my settings, how were you able to add a esim ?
Is esim available on android above 11 ?

I am not a big fan of resetting the phone ^^
But if i have to… ^^ how stable is the dev version ? (I know it is a stupid question ^^

Hmm, I see you don’t have the (+) next to mobile…

I switched recently to the same model (fixing screen and secondhand was same price :woman_shrugging::woman_shrugging:) and I had v2.x-t-dev installed and I was able to add and eSIM.

What you could try is just scan the QR code of the eSIM and see what happends, just use the native QR code scanner or an other app. No need to do it from the menu.

Now for switch from stable to dev.

stable is the version Murena uses for the phones they sell. A stable phone will get OTA OS Upgrades. Therefore you don’t have to worry about major OS versions. Everything else as far as I know is the same. When they release lets say 2.4 a FP3 dev will be released and couple days later (if no major errors found) stable gets released. Hope that clears it up.

Depending on how much knowledge you have and excitment you get from flashing, you could try to flash everything over the current OS. You have to do a backup in any case. New install or trying so called ‘dirty flash’. I can help you prepare the necessary files. After that it is more or less commands in a certain order.

Just to clarify … did you not add your e-SIM on Android 11 (R)? Did you have to wait for Android 13 (T)?

I added on R in August 2023 and I switched phone (same model) installed with T and had to get another eSim.

And as far I remember I allways scanned a QR code and it just worked, not needed any menu or setting to start from.

@lukhe I also see no fields on which to directly add an eSIM on a Motorola, Android 13 (T). This article seems to suggest that you look to the eSIM provider, for necessary instructions (and exclusions?) … Set up and use an eSIM | Mobile Help | EE.

Do you have an eSIM provider in mind already?

If there is a a prospect of you doing an upgrade you might ask the provider also about the transferability of the eSIM and its credit and data.

I feel this does not fit well with a cryptic answer

I made quite a few assertions in my first post. I included

… however there may be expert ways to do this upgrade without Format data … these (including your experience @mihi) are discussed in this thread Dirty upgrade to /e/OS-T look possible!.

I edited my post, to be more clear which part I disagreed. Hope less cryptic now.

Hello there,
Again I am really sorry for the long disapearance. Thank you all.
@aibd , Thank a lot.
Long story short, I had a old Pixel 4a (the “broken” one that made me buy the new 4a). It wasn’t broken anymore (didn"t spent enough time to debug/fix it since it is a mandatory tool for my daily job…)
So, I took the time to update following your procedure and voila !

  • Get back to Google’s android version (11 only): (with the Factory image, your link, and not with OTA !)
recovery mode will don’t like the fact that it can’t verify integrity and timestamp is older, but ignore/force it.
  • Restart the phone and update to 13 normally on google android
  • And reinstall e-fundation following the procedure;…
Again, thank you a lot !
