I have new Fairphone ge. 6+ with /e/os with camera app (com.fps.camera v8.0.01.0011.2.0).
I’ve noticed that the photo quality is very poor. I’m not sure if this is a technical issue with the camera itself, the software, or a combination of both. Artifacts caused by JPEG compression are visible when viewing the photos on a computer, so I am certain that compression is responsible for the loss of quality.
How can I set a lower compression level in the default Fairphone Camera app? I can’t seem to find this option in the settings anywhere.
Would it be better to use a different app? If so, which one?
Have you tried changing the Photo Size from ‘Standard’ to ‘50MP (4:3) - HIGH PIXEL’ in the FP camera settings?
I’ve a FP6 but as I don’t routinely use the FP camera, I use a GCam port instead, I’m not sure how much difference this might make. It increases file size significantly though.
If you want to try another camera app, and don’t mind a bit of initial fiddling about, I’ve tried a few GCam ports and settled on this one
MGC_9.4.103_V36_snap.apk (org.codeaurora.snapcam)
from BSG: MGC_9.4.103_V36
I find it produces better photos than the FP camera once set up, noticeably better dynamic range in clouds for instance. Worth taking the time go through the settings to find the best setup. In ‘More settings’ > ‘Configuration of modes’ > Interface I’ve found ‘Pixel 6 (Oriole)’ to be the best fit to start with.
Unfortunately, the app you recommended isn’t working properly. You can take photos with it, but the program freezes after selecting slow-motion videos.
Unfortunately, that is a problem with the Fairphone 6/6+: there is no good camera software. I hope that eventually someone will create software that works properly, or that the original Fairphone app will be improved.
Yes, it’s not perfect, but for photos, which I’d understood to be your concern, I do think it’s better than the FP camera.
As far as I can tell it’s just on the 0.7 wide angle setting that it crashes in slow-motion video, on 1.0 it works fine at both speeds. I don’t record much video so it’s fine for my needs, I just ignore the 0.7 setting.
I mentioned the Pixel 6 setting as I found it a good balance between earlier models where some functions aren’t available and later models where there are more settings which are not compatible and so don’t work. From memory there’s just a couple of things offered in the interface that dont work, which I find easy to ignore. The quality of the photos it produces makes it worth it for me.
