Privacy-friendly smartwatch : does it exist?

Hello all !

Sorry if this might seem like a silly question. My wife is running /e/ on fairphone 6, with just a few non-FOSS apps. We need to change her watch, and would like some recommendation on the most privacy-friendly (or less data-leak) smartwatch, compatible with /e/ (if exists) or usable with a desktop.

Our need : 1 heartrate/running monitoring, 2 altitude, because we do a lot of mountaineering
We don’t need all the extra GPS tracking, AI coaching and all these things.

Just a simple watch which could record her BPM and give her the altitude when we need would be fine. Unfortunately there is not a lot of choice nowadays if you want a “non-smart” device, and I found only ones which do the altitude (e.g. suunto core) or the BPM (Polar), but not both of the features. In cas we want both I think we will need a smartwacth, but usually it requires connecting to smartphone, creating an account, etc… and we don’t want to give all her data to big-techs.

Any ideas ?

I have the same question.

There will be some results from a forum :magnifying_glass_tilted_left: Search: Gadgetbridge.

A search for Gadgetbridge supported devices gives a good clue of devices where one could throw away the propietary app.

I recently switch from Polar Ignite to UNA watch, that has the same sustainability principle of Fairphone.

By now, it needs its app for download tracks from the watch, but it is under continuously development.

Exodus score is 6/10.

Interesting.
I didn’t find on their website for how long they commit to produce/sell spare parts for repairing. Do you have the information ?

No, I don’t.

I waited a long time before they start selling one month ago and its a young project…:crossed_fingers:

I remember looking at this aswell, and found there is a Open source Linux based Smartwatch OS called AsteroidOS and also found one called Open-Smartwatch.

Haven’t gotten far enough to tell how it works or how to install it, have infact not even gotten a smart watch yet…. not sure what features it even includes or if its compatible with /e/. But it exists
