Random UI Stalling

Anyone else seeing random stalling of the System UI? Started experiencing since upgrade to 4.0, still doing it on 4.1. Only way to recover is restart the OS. Symptoms are an apparent random lock-up and then a Wait/Close dialogue appears. Fairphone 4.

Still seeing random stalls from the UI. Would it be an OS problem or app? It seems to be random and needs a restart of the phone to correct.

with title “System UI” ?

There are visual frame rate debug helper in the dev options. Afaik it taints frame drops by class / type.

Checking logcat before a stall can give context

Yes. I’ve now turned on Auto Bug reporting and will see if anything gets flagged in next few days.

the gpu profiler is behind these options: https://developer.android.com/topic/performance/rendering/inspect-gpu-rendering#enable_rendering_profiler

  • On your device, go to Settings and tap Developer Options.
  • In the Monitoring section, select Profile GPU Rendering or Profile HWUI rendering, depending on the version of Android running on the device.
  • In the Profile GPU Rendering dialog, choose On screen as bars to overlay the graphs on the screen of your device.

it will draw a graph like this on screen. When the stall happens, maybe one color is dominant:

Thanks for info and I apologise for my delay in replying. So when I enable the option and look at homescreen, the colour bars scroll continuously smoothly across. But when I open an application, they are very jerky, especially when looking at email client. The issue you linked from its description does sound very similar. I haven’t quite worked out what triggers it. But the only way to recover is to reboot. I have been running lots of intermediate beta/RC builds so don’t know if that might be related. I could wipe phone and try again but don’t really want to go through agro of doing that unless absolutely necessary.

Having done the same in the past, intermediate Clear cache of System apps seems especially important.

One would think that the effect of dirty cache would wear off in time but may be worth trying before Factory reset.

However your study may now be throwing up evidence of current murenacloud-issues

My wife’s phone is also FP4 which was running the same build of E/OS but from a clean install and she also gets the same stalling - which is good because I think that rules out any Beta build influences. I’ve literally just installed the 4.3 beta for A16, so will run that for a day or so and see if the problem still persists compared to 4.2 A14.

So, a day of use with A16 4.3 beta compared to 4.2 suggests a significant improvement with stalling on both my phone and my wife’s. Not perfect but much less frequent and after closing the stalling app, not had to restart the phone, unlike with 4.2.
