Recommendation for offline local translation in 52 languages

One of the things that I found missing in the eOS browser was the option to translate text like in Firefox. But let me tell you, this is something of the past. There’s a great app. Just check out the following.

Features:
• On-device translation using Mozilla’s translation models
• Transliteration of non-latin script
• OCR (Optical Character Recognition) for translating text in images
• Automatic language detection
• Image translation overlay that preserves original formatting
• Support for multiple language pairs
• No internet required for translation once models are downloaded
• All translation happens locally

I have briefly tested it. The OCR translation works good enough. The translation is quite fast and obviously on the same level as the translation on Firefox because it’s the same technology.

And here comes the twist. If you select a text in eOS browser and then use the menu, there will be an entry called translate, which will give you a nice interface to show the original text and the translated text. Alternatively, you can use the share menu to send selected text from any app that is supporting this to this translation app. This is so fun to use.
