Some reflections from a new user - tldr all pretty perfect.
I’ve moved from Google Pixel to FairPhone6 with e.OS v4.0. I’m also using the Proton suite.
Everything is better than I anticipated, I was up and running in a day, and my Pixel is now off.
Annoying issues
- Regarding the FP6, as mentioned numerous times the power and volume buttons are exactly parallel on either side of the phone and this causes unintended responses.
- I miss wireless charging, I understand the sustainability concerns but don’t like having trailing cables in the car and office.
Apps that had issues
Nothing significant, I have lots of disparate apps, and everything works - but

Volvo - As expected my Volvo car app refuses even to install.

MediaMonkey – Installs and works, but I cannot access my Pro license without Google Play.
I’ll ask Ventis about this.

SignalStrength – again installs and works, but I cannot access my Premium license without Google Play.

UK National Lottery – strangely this fails to install with “App Unavailable”, with and without VPN active.

OS Locate – again this fails to install with “App Unavailable”, with and without VPN active

WhatsApp – Seems like only Google and Apple can be used as cloud provides for backups.
Proton Services

My Proton contacts cannot be used as default phone contacts, but that’s an issue with Proton.

I haven’t yet found a way of pointing my Proton drive to the SD card, again an issue with Proton I think.
All in all I should have done this years ago, no doubt there will be some niche issues, but the whole experience so far has been very satisfying.
