Reflections from a new user

Some reflections from a new user - tldr all pretty perfect.

I’ve moved from Google Pixel to FairPhone6 with e.OS v4.0. I’m also using the Proton suite.

Everything is better than I anticipated, I was up and running in a day, and my Pixel is now off.

Annoying issues

  • Regarding the FP6, as mentioned numerous times the power and volume buttons are exactly parallel on either side of the phone and this causes unintended responses.
  • I miss wireless charging, I understand the sustainability concerns but don’t like having trailing cables in the car and office.

Apps that had issues

Nothing significant, I have lots of disparate apps, and everything works - but

  • Volvo - As expected my Volvo car app refuses even to install.

  • MediaMonkey – Installs and works, but I cannot access my Pro license without Google Play.

    I’ll ask Ventis about this.

  • SignalStrength – again installs and works, but I cannot access my Premium license without Google Play.

  • UK National Lottery – strangely this fails to install with “App Unavailable”, with and without VPN active.

  • OS Locate – again this fails to install with “App Unavailable”, with and without VPN active

  • WhatsApp – Seems like only Google and Apple can be used as cloud provides for backups.

Proton Services

  • My Proton contacts cannot be used as default phone contacts, but that’s an issue with Proton.

  • I haven’t yet found a way of pointing my Proton drive to the SD card, again an issue with Proton I think.

All in all I should have done this years ago, no doubt there will be some niche issues, but the whole experience so far has been very satisfying.

Which Pixel did you come from? I ask because even being google phone they do operate under eOS extremely well.

Pixel7, I liked the SD card storage on the FairPhone though, also a bit lighter.

You should consider moving it over to eOS as a backup. The boot-loader is even re-lockable. I recommend using the command line install method.

BTW I installed Signal Strength in anonymous mode and it’s working well here.
