Requesting user feedback by testing BeaconDB

Nice, so basically you say to privacy concerned e os users , logically at least 95% of them, to use LineageOS if they care about privacy. Just confirming that I have right asking : murena where are you going to? We have google already!

The logical error here is that you assume caring about privacy means adopting 100% of your view. This is not the case.

It was just pointed out that if you don’t like certain aspects about /e/OS regarding privacy, you could always start with LineageOS (like /e/OS does) and then try to apply the fine-tuning you deem necessary yourself.

Additionally: Are everybody else here apart from you paid actors just trying to disrupt your just cause?

(Oh, which reminds me, start of the month has passed already, gotta check my accounts.)

Privacy is not matter of ( my or anyone )view.
You have privacy if you have anonimity and your actions ( on internet or real life) can not be tracked, including where you have been, where are you going or what you are doing, or what your interests are. ( note that credit or debit card paying reveal a lot about you already). There are services made with primary goal that you can not be private, incoorporated in google services, but also other like NLS. Of course services like MDM ( google and not google)which enables full remote control over your phone goes beyond privacy which make no sense if mdm exist. There are others like find my phone, trackers …( which can be on your phone but also your ISP)
Every day new vectors of penetrating someone privacy is being made. (I can elaborate this technically but this is not place for this) Instead enforcing privacy to keep in battle we plan to add oil into fire? Where stronges reason provided is if you are lost in building? no automatic time zone or you dont have gps? Seriously?
If someone can track all or most of above stated you have no privacy. Some services gives too much info to other techniques that your privacy can be completely lost. There is nothing about my view or your view in this. This is technical fact.
I just claim it makes no sense limitating your self with e os , which (limitation)is fact we can all agree, if you have privacy as much as with google. NLS is like virus. You dont need to use NLS as long as others around you are using this you are exposed.
We may just argue if these informations are available to government, google, any company or even your neighbour with technical skills, or everybody. Or no one what is primary goal of privacy. We can argue how much privacy lost we can afford to get some wanted usability.
But technically there are some points which can indirectly expose you fully whether you are aware of this or not. MDM is one such feature. I argue NLS is another, in some sense even more dirty, as technically you are exposing even users which does not use it.
I stated that eos roadmap with MDM, NLS, find my phone… makes nonsense if you needed to change bank for other banking app to be able to use e os? Why? if technically your privacy will be the same as with google?

I have a feeling that I need to give you simplified example so reader can judge whether I am attacking someone or my motives are honest for this community. Lets say that you are using e os with good VPN provider (if such exists) and use web browser with decent fingerprint protection (so unfortunately not this one with e os ,but brave for example.
Let’s say that 100000 people in world have the same fingerprint as you.
As you likely know VPN has no protection regarding fingerprint.
But if you add location to this data it is likely that there are only few in your town with same fingerprint and just YOU in few kilometers range. If not in that moment it will be in day range.
So by your location you will have unique fingerprint.
There are multiple ways to get your name from unique fingerprint.
Lets use non smartphone one.
After you pay at most few times with credit/debit card in different or same stores, with smartphone in your pocket, your web fingerprint will be connected to your name/identity. Everything you do on web you are known by your name from this time.
They don’t even need to ask VPN provider anything.
This is just example so reader can judge by himself what makes sense what do not.

Just leave if you don’t like it.

I think the answer to this is ā€œI’m far happier for businesses like Murena to know my location, rather than Google, which is proven to be manipulative with that dataā€

Privacy in using technology relies on trust. All of us here have lost trust in Google. However we retain trust with Murena until proven otherwise. This is grace.

@xlionjuan, If you suggests others to ā€œjustā€ leave may I ask you for how long you are using e os ? Why would I ā€œjustā€ leave e os which I have donated for example (not under this account to not influence) ? I have right to express opinion especially backed up with honest intentions. Sudden change of ā€œpolicyā€ which is very notable this year brought my attention. It is ā€œnot normalā€ that any rom especially privacy concerned rom introduces MDM, closed source, pretending like ā€œno big dealā€, with small notice within release notes? You push full control over others phones ā€œwith note you have option to not use itā€ ?
Again I call e os to publish MDM code that we see it can not be activated remotely and what it can do. (Thank you in advance.)
As people noticed it is about trust and I agree.
I may leave just as e os can change policy to something fully not private. This is their right. After all they would have more money and servers would not be that problem.
But I would still care about community interested in privacy.
Average use does not need to be expert but deserves to know and read other opinions. It is up to each individual to have own conclusions does this something make sense (like privacy e os provides), based on all information from different sources about any topic. You have your opinion which does not be aligned with mine but I would never suggest you to ā€œjustā€ leave whether you disagree with me, someone else, or you don’t like where e os in going too. Truly respecting other right to express opinion became rare last years. Lost when we became ā€œinclusiveā€

The use of Network Location Providers has always been there within eOS, it used to be Mozilla MLP, then it switched to another one when Mozilla stopped. So no new ā€œpolicyā€ from eOS here. The topic here concerns feedback testing beaconDB instead of the default one and compared to MLP. There is already plenty of topics in this forum discussing either MDM or privacy in general, please go and contribute over there because I’m tired of having the beaconDB topic flooded with off-topic never-ending debates.
