SIM card not working after update

Hello there!

I’ve recently updated my /e/ version to 3.4. However, after the install/reboot, my SIM card stopped working.

Selecting my usual service provider yielded one of two failures every time I tried: a no service notification and stuck in emergency call mode OR no connection bars despite the service provider’s name appearing in the top right of the screen.

I’ve tried putting the SIM card into another phone, and it appears to work fine.
I’ve also contacted the service provider, they’ve told me that it is likely a problem with my phone.

I can use the other phone for the time being, but would obviously rather use the newer one.

Has anyone else encountered this issue? I can provide additional info if required.

After updating to 3.4, my phone seems not to recognize my SIM car anymore. Everything else works, except it does not “see” the SIM. When I put that SIM in an older Pixel phone on stock android, it works flawlessly.

  • e/os version: 3.4 official (freshly updated from 3.3 official)
  • phone: Fairphone 6
  • country: Switzerland (if this can help)

This is a major problem. Everything else works fine, Moments is a very welcome addition for me, a couple of minor banking apps do currently not work anymore but this was expected and I can find ways around this. But having my FP6 essentially only working as a wifi device and having to rely on an older android phone for basic call and messages functionality is a bummer.

Hopefully a solution and an update can be found soon.

@skk @Boot Did you check the APN settings?

Yes, even if I had to dig around a bit to understand what you were talking about. I did check, and it does not seem to be related to that.
Quite simply, since 3.4 the SIM does not “link” to any operator network, and if I try to choose and select it manually it is unsuccessful in connecting. Never had any problem since 3.1. And I tried the SIM in three different phones now, it works in all three of them but not on FP6 since updating to 3.4

What provider do you have?

Greetings from Switzerland

(Swiss greetings as well)

I have a prepaid from them for testing purposes, I will put it later into my daily FP6 (community) and give it a try.

Even though the symbol suggested other wise, it worked to make and receive a call with my FP6.

Still no sugar for me. Apparently a 3.4.1 version is already in the works, let’s hope it also fixes this. I seem to remember a similar problem occured with 3.1 or 3.2, can’t recall which version exactly.

What is your confidence level on this?

A relatively new apn issue might occur in the relatively new fp6 bearing in mind that APN “methods” are in development. There is also the option to ask your carrier to perform an APN reset from their end.

Pretty high. As in: I actually tried adding manually APN settings, asking my carrier to perform a reset and so on. No cigar. SIM works on other phones, not on FP6 only since updating to /e/OS 3.4 (it worked fine before).

If a fp6 phone issue you might Report an issue.

We might try to isolate what setting on the phone might have changed by update.

As OP do you have emergency calls only, do you have mobile data? If yes would indicate the SIM is connecting to the carrier, but I think you are defining different from OP. Although your carrier conversation would reveal if you had no contact to base.

Could you have incorrect settings for instance trying to use 3G where it is not available, for instance?

Use Settings > Search facility to perhaps check in Network preferences and more specifically Preferred network type.

You say the card works on regular Android but not /e/OS. This happens quite frequently where your carrier takes advantage of Google helpers not available in AOSP to dynamically optimise settings.
