Smartphone Photography

Hi,

I’ve been listening to a podcast about digital minimalism, and I’m interested in applying that concept by eliminating my DSLR from my life.

I use a Fairphone 5 with /e/OS. Is there a photo community that would be suitable for me?

Regain your privacy! Adopt /e/OS, the deGoogled mobile operating system and online services phone

So, I submit that there are a couple of things to unpack here. This is my opinion, it’s free advice, feel free to return it for double your money back  .

I don’t think getting rid of a DSLR is necessarily a good idea in this context. You’ve paid for it, and there’s no recurring cost to owning it. It doesn’t send data back to a Google/Oracle mothership. It doesn’t plague you with ads or push notifications. You can let it sit on a shelf for a bit, then come back to it. In fact, I passed down my Canon EOS Rebel XT, a nearly 20-year-old camera, to my niece, who’s loving it, despite having not been born when I bought it.

The sort of photography enabled by a DSLR is a specific hobby. For the ‘fun with friends’ photos, any smartphone will do. For the low-light, macro, time-lapse, false-color, high zoom photos where a DSLR shines, it’s an artistic tool that enables expression and brings enjoyment. Minimalism is a great way to avoid matters of excess, but I would submit that having your DSLR enable you to have a low-cost, high-enjoyment hobby is a much better option than many others (anyone who has a ‘project car’ will tell you how those cost both time and money in GREAT excess of what a DSLR will ever cost in either). If minimalism is to be embraced in a truly productive way, it’s not just getting rid of things, it’s getting rid of the right things…and of all the hobbies available, DSLR photography seems like one of the best options available to enable more pressing reductions in other areas.

But, to more directly answer your question…I’d submit that an online photography community isn’t going to be particularly concerned about which phone you’re using, or whether you’re using /e/OS or not. I don’t think there’s a specific forum for ‘photography on /e/OS’ - feel free to start one, but I think you’d be better off enjoying a community like DPReviews or FStoppers, where your photos incidentally come from a Fairphone 5. While OpenCamera has a good number of manual modes that can help bridge the gap from a DSLR, the more holistic photography communities may be able to help point to other photo apps or on-phone editors that could be of assistance if you truly want to find a new home for your DSLR.

Hope it helps!

Since cell phones have been equipped with camera lenses (I think the first one was the Nokia 7650), I have also been looking for an acceptable smartphone camera. I have spent a lot of money - but never found a device that even came close to meeting my requirements!

Taking photos with a smartphone is not real photography. It’s a limitless flood of images, 95% of which are garbage and at least 80% of which won’t survive the next 10 years digitally.

I agree with @Voyager529 - I wouldn’t swap my normal digicam for a smartphone either.

Concentrating and focusing on a subject with a real camera is mindfulness. Taking a snapshot with a dirty smartphone lens is mostly digital overconsumption!
