Sony XZ2 Compact recovery image doesn't boot

Hello World.

I’m trying to install /e/ on a Sony XZ2 Compact H8324. Unfortunately I started the process with flashing the phone with the akari boot image, which allowed me to get into recovery mode. Having then realised my error, I started over and flashed the correct xz2c image. However, the phone doesn’t boot into recovery mode at all - after showing the standard security message about unlocked boot loader, when it should show the Sony logo, it goes black and reboots.

Same with the lineage images - the akari ones work for booting into recovery, the xz2c ones don’t.

How can I fix this, please?

Did you follow the installation guide?

https://doc.e.foundation/devices/xz2c/install

Well, I initially followed the one for the XZ2 (non-compact) version and got everything installed for that. Obviously, the OS wouldn’t work.

I then tried to follow the correct guide for the XZ2 Compact, starting from the botched phone. This is where I ran into the error described above.

Having said all that, I then tried to recover the phone to factory settings using the Newflasher tool to flash an original Sony image acquired through XPeriFirm. This gave me a fresh factory-reset phone to restart from, and at the moment this looks very promising.

Will update in half an hour or so.

Not sure how different it is but you could also follow LineageOS but just use /e/OS/ file. Might work also :man_shrugging::man_shrugging:

Restarting from a freshly installed standard Sony firmware did the trick.

Not sure what action did break it initially in my case, but it was my fault for having started on the wrong build anyway.

In the end, the step by step guidance worked fine, restarting from a well-defined state.
