Support on Telegram? really?

The answer to your question should’ve come much faster as it’s quite simple: /e/ has the goal of bringing privacy friendly smartphones to the majority of people, especially those who don’t understand much about privacy, information technologies, etc.

Telegram is a relatively well-known messenger that is accessible and easy to use. This is actually quite important, because quite frankly most people don’t give a damn about any of this. It’s much better to take things slowly and step by step, slowly introducing alternatives rather than risking scaring people off (which has historically been a problem for Linux communities for years). I bet most if not all the people visiting this forum who are privacy-supporters started the same way: Gmail accounts, Facebook pages, Whatsapp, etc. I really don’t see the point of going full paranoid-mode if you are just a regular citizen, either. There has to be a balance to keep things going on.

This article talks about the topic of introducing people too fast to new technologies and habits.

Aside from that, I agree with what has been said here: Telegram support group is open already. If you feel /e/ is “setting a bad example” that’s all right but understand also that there are much bigger issues to deal with and one can’t fight all fronts at once.

Thank you, that is an elaborate post and gives the answer I was looking for. I agree with the “Linux problem” and that is why I asked in the other post if it is advisable to “introduce e to my mom”

I also appreciated Pnj88’s answer, very explanatory, and also very diplomatic.

But I repeat to you, however, that what you expressed on the telegram is YOUR thoughts, not those of the rest of the people.
For example, I believe instead that Telegram is a tool very careful about privacy and also about on not sharing or selling user data… and like me, there are a lot of people who think so.

So, you as a human being, are obviously free to believe what you want about anything, but many others don’t think like you.

So who’s right?
And who’s wrong?
ABSOLUTELY NO ONE!!!

Or, another example:
I believe that microg is not a good tool for privacy discourse relatively to google, but obviously /e/ foundation thinks differently from me, because it has been officially chosen as a system component of /e/OS… so who is right? Me and those who think like me, or all the others and also /e/ foundation?

Absolutely no one!!!

When the choice to keep microg as part of /e/OS will cause me discomfort, then I will be free not to use it anymore and orient myself towards something else…

Free to use and believe what we want on telegram, or any other communication tool… but at the end of the games here, we also use telegram for support… let’s face it!

@anon38440295: Whether or not something or someone is protecting and respecting privacy is not a matter of someones belief. You can belief in any myths or gods or ancestors but not in science. In science it is a matter of knowing the facts that were scientifically collected in the search for the truth. The facts are showing that Telegram is not safe to use, just search the net. (I cant post the links to the source of information here since they get banned for some strange reasons.)

I agree with you on the microg issue and uninstalling that is the first thing I will do once my e preinstalled phone arrives (It is possible to uninstall microg, right?). It baffles me every time I here people wanting a LOS phone but then asking for the Gapps …

Which privacy specialists say telegram is good? These say it is not good, and they investigate details:

“If you are currently using an Instant Messenger like Telegram, LINE, Viber, WhatsApp, or plain SMS, you should pick an alternative here.”

People sometimes make the mistake to beleive everything thats on the net. I’m sure you can find ‘facts’ that Telegram IS safe also.

The telegram channel can be accessed via matrix. For anyone who would like to do this, the room is #e:librem.one

Instant messaging is a very thorny issue for sure, especially that other people’s preferences have to be considered otherwise you end up with more messaging apps than friends on your phone (this is not a joke or exageration). Sadly there isn’t any particular one I can fully recommend myself. I can understand the enthusiasm people have for this or that platform but unfortunately we don’t have a silver bullet at the moment. For reference what other well known privacy product has considered: https://tails.boum.org/blueprint/mobile_messaging/

Someone asked for proof of Telegram being dodgy (sorry, only available in German). Basically the German Police is warning parents about Telegram (not that the German Police would be trustworthy in general but still …): www . tagesspiegel . de/berlin/verfassungsschutz-brandenburg-warnt-eltern-telegram-steam-und-bitchute-wo-rechte-cyber-extremisten-nachwuchs-rekrutieren/26150648.html

Im sorry for the distorted link but some moderators here think a legit source is spam just because the text is written in German.

Moderators probably think it’s spam because it has nothing with the discussion. When you make such statements like “proof of Telegram being dodgy” you should spell it out what the problem is, because in that link the problem is exlusively from the “think of the children” perspective, it’s “dodgy” because it’s also used (as is Steam and Twitter and Facebook and virtually any public platform I heard and some I didn’t hear about) by right-wing extremists and Corona-sceptics.
