Thank you for your help, it worked - re: How do I get this Hide my IP off? Phone is extremely slow (Fairphone 5)

Just received my new Fairphone 5 with e/OS today, but am highly frustrated at how the phone and the system work. Very unclear, apps do not work or need Google logins, etc. Very frustrating and I am ready to throw the phone out of the window / return it for a simple non-fair-android.
I chose to hide my IP, because if I want privacy, then yes? But now the thing is extremely slow and my blood pressure is rising. I had to take the battery out to turn the thing off. The battery is also heating up very fast, not something my old Gigaset had (but that broke down this morning).
How do I turn this ā€œhide my IPā€ off?

Regain your privacy! Adopt /e/OS the deGoogled mobile OS and online servicesphone

I also have a fairphone 5 sold by Murena (so under e/os).

  1. First: the type of phone preferably (at least the os) is to be used by avoiding if possible any application linked to google.

  2. Second: the advance privacy system has the choice of offering to hide your IP, on the other hand these are normally also mentioned but you will have a much slower connection, because the ā€œhide my IPā€ is none other than the Tor system.

In reality your IP is not hidden but mixed with other shared IPs, so you have the IP of another person during your navigation.

Be careful this is not a VPN, I invite you if you really do not want to take the risk to go through a real VPN.

  1. Third: my fairphone does not really heat up, I do not play any games and only use a few basic applications so I do not have this problem.

I highly doubt that this smartphone is really suitable for gaming without heating up a lot, at least thatā€™s not the use I make of it.

  1. to deactivate ā€˜hide your IPā€™ you go to ā€œnetwork and internetā€, ā€œVPNā€, ā€œadvanced privacyā€ and you deactivate.

Or, on your home screen when you switch to the left you have a few shortcuts, including advanced privacy. You uncheck the box ā€œhide my IPā€.

If you are adapted to basic android versions you will have trouble finding your bearings with E/OS, it took me a few days to adapt and I donā€™t regret it =D

Thank you Jeann. I do not use my phone for gaming, but for phoning, and I have to be reachable via a few social apps, and the LibreLink app (medical).
I went back to the original settings, and the phone is not extremely slow anymore, and this Tor ā€œHide your IPā€ is no longer activated.
I had not so good experiences with Fairphone 2 (only used it 2 yrs before it was just too bad. bad microphone etc). So I went to another brand, but they no longer sell their batteries, so I thought this is the only real fair phone that does its real best, letā€™s see if they have improved. But maybe this and the e/OS is too much for me at the moment.
My old phone died this morning, so I cannot download everything that was on there, except if it was on the SIMcard.
And for Whatsapp I do need to log into google, unfortunately. But I can live with that. But not with a malfunctioning phone or system.
I just did an update for the latest e/OS, in hopes this is more stable.
At the moment I just need to be reachable, but I have 14 days to return the phone and get another one, if need be.

Be aware that you can use ā€œHide my IPā€ selectively such that not all apps will be routed via it. If you restrict its use to apps where you really need that level of anonymity then the overall experience should be better. e.g. itā€™s not much use if an app has access to your location. I restrict it to the browser and only when researching sensitive topics.

In my opinion, the fact that you think it may be defective or even a little slow is due to E/OS.

E/OS has an update every 1-2 months but it is not perfect, I know for example that some applications bug from time to time, the mobile network is not very stable (in addition I use a VPN so : instability + VPN which is also slightly unstable = hassle).

In addition, the browser provided with E/OS is a disaster that almost never works (for me in any case when searching there is systematically an error page). I went through Brave so that it works well.

E/OS remains very good for a base of anonymity and blocking of trackers etc ā€¦ but is currently unstable.

If you were simply on Fairphone with the basic Fairphone updates you probably wouldnā€™t have the problem youā€™re currently seeing, on the other hand it would be Google with a lot of data collection applications etcā€¦

e/os is not for every one, same as Android is not : )

e/os does an amazing job in terms of privacy.

I adopted e/os coming from Lineage. I have a different device rather than a Faiphone.

Itā€™s expected for the connection (both LTE/wifi) when hide my ip is on.

Itā€™s also expected to run into issues with certain apps on any degoogled os. Overall, I found e/os to be a bit more compatible on that matter since I do no use any specific apps.

Feel free to check this out for app compatibility

Regarding default browser, I like it. Itā€™s light, simple, and works fine for me. As Jenn pointed, Brave browser is a good option.

About battery temp, try closing apps when not in use. Apps in background will take up memory and battery. (This goes for any device regardless of os)

Happy new year to all!

Only to back up to your Google account, which is not mandatoryā€¦

Thank you all very much here for your help and advice! Iā€™ve struggled but it seems I am getting the hang of it more now, and the phone works as it should now.
I like the idea of alternative apps, but if they are not used much by others, it is not a lot of use, unfortunately. I use Threema, but only with 1 other friend
I normally use a VPN by Proton, will check how that goes on this device. And I use Firefox as a browser. I was also able to install and use LibreLink, the app I use for my bloodsugar sensor, so that is cool too, even though they run through google.
I am more of a ā€˜flexitarianā€™ I suppose, as long as the majority is not over to de-googled products. At least there are also offline maps and such available.
Happy New Year!

I also use threema which works very well on E/OS.

Even if others do not systematically use alternative apps dedicated to confidentiality, this is not a problem.

If you want to pay attention to your confidentiality and others do not, then you just have to separate yourself from these people =), or simply also use applications adapted to confidentiality.

Example Threema as you mentioned is the best application on the privacy and anonymity side.

Others will talk about signals but they ask for your telephone number so these are to be avoided.

I also used protonVPN before which works well, on the other hand there are ads etc ā€¦ so I preferred to go through NordVPN, even if it is easily bugged on E/OS I admit I prefer the choices offered by it ā€œlike the double vpn or the onion vpnā€.

An advantage despite what I detailed on another post, with the lounge app even if you download apps used by Google, their trackers are blocked and cannot directly collect your data, on the other hand the application that you will use will collect your data as usual to resell them and also offer you advertising.

I am waiting for there to be a social network that can be used like Threema, you pay once and you can then register with no personal information etc ā€¦

Letā€™s be honest we have all been too used without asking questions to having our personal life pumped without really paying attention, by using various services that say they are ā€œfreeā€, but the truth is that nothing is free so you might as well pay directly.

In addition, we are all in flexibility, we canā€™t immediately leave everything without finding another solution.

In messaging the solution is clearly Threema (The ID you create is not linked to your initial purchase, thatā€™s perfect and you can buy in BTC and by mail too).

In social networks, video platforms, etc. I found nothing unfortunately.

Stay positive, E/OS is really a good choice despite many flaws, it is currently not a big company like Google with millions or even billions of euros.

This may be due to the default search engine set in the browser. It points to /e/OS Spot by default, which currently is (as you have noticed) not very stableā€¦ The search engine can be changed however in the browser settings. (Using Brave browser or Firefox is obviously a workaround, and a good one at that IMHO.)

This should not happen - is the problem still there? (I do not have a Fairphone 5, and while I think to have read elsewhere about some temperature problems in case of high load, I do not think that this should be the case by default.)

Which ads? Never seen them in ProtonVPN.

There is regularly an announcement to offer you their paid model to benefit from more choice.

After all, in any case, ProtonVPN does not offer in its so-called ā€œfreeā€ version what the competitor offers at a better price

@Tentos: Since resetting the phone to the initial settings, it has not heated up so much anymore, but I think it (battery heating up) is also a Fairphone-issue, but in this case it had to do with this ā€œHide my IPā€, it seems.

I also have not seen other ads than for Proton itself. I use the paid version (but not the most expensive one).
