The /e/OS install instructions for Fairphone 5 do not match the device's behaviour

The /e/OS installation instructions for Fairphone 5 have inconsistencies and abstractions that are enough to make me nervous about performing this install.

For example, it says

Boot into bootloader/fastboot mode.

Power OFF the device.
Hold Power + Volume Down button combo simultaneously.

This doesn’t work. The phone boots normally if I do this. (It also doesn’t say how long the buttons should be held.)

In a previous step, the instructions suggest

Reboot on fastboot by running the command in the PC console adb reboot bootloader

Does that not achieve the same result? The phone needs to be connected to the computer, so why not tell users to launch the bootloader from the command line and so have consistent instructions?

Details are important. You cannot rely on common device behaviour, they are all a little bit different. The instructions should be explicit. What does the bootloader screen look like? How do i know that I’ve done it correctly?

I just found the documentation suggestions thread.

Personally I find the buttons highly cumbersome to use for recovery and fastboot. Whenever I can I use “adb reboot bootloader” or “adb reboot recovery” or “fastboot reboot recovery” instead of using the buttons. Hasn’t caused a problem for me yet.
