Unable to create account in GitLab

I had a problem/bug I wanted to report on GitLab. When I tried to create an account there, it said:

1 error prohibited this user from being saved:
Email is not allowed for sign-up. Please use your regular email address. Check with your administrator.

I gave my first and last name and my regular email address on my own domain. The username I gave was reported as free.
What gives?
