Upgraded Moto G OS, lost all of my data

I wasnt able to backup my data with TWRP because my phone doesn’t have enough storage. I went ahead and manually upgraded my moto G osprey to the latest OS anyways, and lost all of my data. Im assuming this is because I wasnt able to backup my data with TWRP? Not the end of the world, was prepared to lose this phone. Just want confirmation that this is why I lost my data.

can you describe your steps taken? shouldn’t the update downloader + e-recovery be able to unpack the ota and preserve your userdata?
