Using Home Assistant Companion App with Matter

Hello!

I’m just getting started with Home Assistant. My very first attempt to connect a device via the Matter protocol failed miserably! Does anyone here have experience with the Home Assistant Companion app (downloaded from the F-Droid Store)? The troubleshooting information in the app mentions, among other things, that it won’t work with “de-Googled” devices.

Problem description:

I want to connect a new Matter device to my Home Assistant. To do this, I open the Home Assistant Companion app. There, I go to Settings → Matter → Add Device → New Device. And here I get a message telling me to install the ‘Home Assistant Companion app’ (which I’m already in!) from the Google Play Store. Here I have the option to open the Google Play Store link, which takes me (back) to the app, or to click the link to the Apple App Store, or simply tap OK, which then takes me to an overview page.

The Troubleshooting Guide states, among other things, that a Google account is required and that devices that have been “de-Googled” will not work. While searching online, I also found the following entry on GitLab: Matter over Thread device commissioning flow fails (some logcat exceptions) · Issue #3859 · home-assistant/android · GitHub.

Question:

Is anyone currently using the Home Assistant (Companion) app and able to successfully add Matter devices to the network with it? Thank you very much!

Best regards and thanks!

The Home Assistant App comes from F-Droid store? If so I would expect it would work with a de-googled phone. What is the purpose of this app I am unfamiliar with it?

Sounds like this is not a F-droid app. So if it is a google app it may not work.

Hi,

Download it from Aurora Store or AppLounge, the F-Droid’s version is a minimal version. Not sur, it will be work like you want.
