…Not that they shouldn’t fix it, but the idea of having a mobile app talk to the vehicle is usually messy, because every one of them that I’ve seen requires an account creation screen that includes a VIN number, so really, your phone isn’t talking to your car, your phone is talking to Someone Else’s Computer, and Someone Else’s Computer sends and receives data between it and the vehicle, which means that you’re not the only one who can send those commands.
Such a system seems like it’d be at odds with the ethos of one who would be using /e/OS or Graphene. I’m presently on a quest to figure out how I can ensure my next car stays off the internet, because that’s strangely difficult to figure out and do reliably…but I digress.
The point is that, while yes, the app shouldn’t have that limitation in place, the nature of the app seems like the kind of thing /e/OS and Graphene are intended to sidestep anyway.

What’s wrong with everyone? I suspected that some native Google function was the problem when the app stopped working. Why should VW surrender to Google? Don’t they want to sell cars? This is bad PR. I hope as many as possible send VW a message.
Weird. Volvo still has an open API, so you can create your own app, and even unlock it automatically when your phone is nearby if you want… Or sound the horn when your favourite team scores a goal…

So in other words you do not like custom ROM’s if that is true what are you doing here?
An alternative to manufacturer’s serves and data links is OVMS:
It is also used, when manufacturers overslept 4G and have still installed 2G / 3G modems while the end of these standards was alredy set (e.g. VW, Stellantis).
According to german forum “goingelectric”, there is a solid user base and it is open source.

Wasn’t Volvo one of the manufacturers that uses a full Google Automotive (or whatever it’s called) in their cars? So that’s no good for /e/os users.
VW was always proud to go its own way, claiming independence from big tech and establishing cariad to provide an alternative.
On another note: I have messaged VW Germany, our data protection agency, politicians and consumer organisations and placed this latest move by VW in the wider context of Google forcing Integrity checks down our throats. The more the merrier in this regard I suppose.
Maybe we should also petition the European Commission: Petition the EU - European Commission
Great, it seems that in addition to Play Integrity check, google tries to enforce a monopole on Re-captcha to have the power to potentially close whatever it wishes following its own interests.
It seems EU regulators are well aware of this, but it always help to make it known to the widest audience possible (mainstream journalists).
It looks like that petition has been submitted 3 years ago, but was more or less turned down due to capacity constraints. But life, business and politics evolve. So, another try is worth it.
Kudos to that Álex Román by the way.
