Here it says double tap works:

"Tap to wake" (still) not working

So, as an update: I don’t know what changed, I’m not aware of any updates since, but out of nowhere this started working. With and without AoD, I can now smoothly wake up my phone by double tapping the screen. Nice. (I did install Google TTS to get Duolingo working again, but that can’t be related, can it?)
