Embedded Maps works on the phone, but not through Android Auto. Am I correct ?
I don’t know about Embedded Maps specifically, but as a general rule, Android Auto, by default, only allows apps from Google Play to show up on a dashboard. Of course, this is the /e/OS community, where we tell defaults that they can go back to the Googleplex they crawled out of . I wrote a whole thread here about how to get any Android Auto compatible app to work with AA, even if it doesn’t come from Google play:
It’s a relatively lengthy read, but it’ll get pretty much any map application working on /e/.
What’s your favorite (Android Auto) App which combine navigation and some privacy ?
I personally rely on Sygic GPS, in no small part because they 1. respected my GDPR request to remove my information except for billing (or, at least, they told me they did), 2. allow offline map downloads so you can firewall the app entirely if you want, or use it on a device with no internet connectivity at all, and it still works perfectly (albeit without traffic data), 3. has a payment process in place independent of Google Play, so I don’t need to tie a Google account to my phone in order to use the premium version…and 4. $15/year is entirely reasonable.
Sygic does have a few quirks though; notably it has a habit of adding a bunch of random “keep going straight” directions, so you’ll be on a 100km stretch of highway and it’ll be like “in 100m, keep going straight”, so it’s not always great at telling you how far until your next actual turn. Also, while it’s gotten a LOT better in the last few months, in years past, its address detection wasn’t always perfect - if going somewhere I didn’t know, I’d sometimes look it up on a map website first, just to be sure, because it sent me to the wrong place a few times based purely on searches.
